Subject: Can I now call myself a triathlete?

Well I finished my first triathalon at the Rose Bowl this weekend.  Was a little worried about the rain, but it stayed away.  There were 800 competitors from 9 years old to 84.  The race was well organized but I didn't think they had enough water stations, only 2.  But my mistake was forgetting my water bottle for my bike so my last drink of water came in the bike tranistion.  Oh well 53 mins without water.  My time was 1 hour 20 mins and 49 secs.  This needs to be adjusted because I started with the wrong group and when I realized it, I came back.  OPPPPS my time already started.  So they will fix my time.  I ran my fastest 3 miles ever, 24 mins 47 secs.  I wasnt as prepared for the bike as I should have been, the 9.5 miles didn't seem like much but it hurt.  Plus I was riding my mountain bike so it wasn't the most comfortable of rides.  I really took my time on the transition from bike to swim.  We had to walk about 200 or so yards to the pool.  Most people ran but I walked to catch my breath.  The water was very warm and felt so good.  I actually didn't do so bad on the swim, I think I was so worried about the other people around me that I forgot if I was tired or not.  Overall, great experience and I can't wait to do another one. Thanks to everyone who answered my previous questions and all your help.

George

Congrats!  It sure is addicting, isn't it?!  (In a good way...)

Two water stations in a sprint sounds pretty generous to me.  Many races that I do have one, and it wouldn't bother me if they had zero.  Anyway, as you hinted, you really don't need water during a sprint.  Take some before the swim and you're good to go to the end.

Congratulations on finishing your first triathlon!  I hope you continue to s/b/r and are already looking forward to continuing to s/b/r and your next race.

As to your question, I think that is up to you.  In my opinion, you don't need to complete an organized race to call yourself a triathlete.  OTOH, calling yourself a triathlete the rest of your like because you completed a triathlon is like calling yourself a golfer after playing your first game of golf.

Anyway, based on you enthusiastic post, I'm guessing you'll continue to s/b/r so.....welcome to the club!

This cracked me up because its so true! I used to shop for clothes and shoes and girl stuff now I squirrel money away to  aero bars, new helmet, bike fitting etc; the wish list seems to be neverending

Do you swim, bike, and run?

If yes, you can call yourself a "triathlete".

edit:  Oh yeah, rose bowl as in the pasadena tyr triathlon, right?  I was going to do that one on a whim but my flight home got delayed so I got back the midnight of the event, and also saw that that the registration was full anyways.
