Two months ago my VO2 was 74. Then I've started to train hard (for marathon). When I measured it recently it was only 69. How is this possible?

Becuase training for a marathon emphasises aerobic fitness, not maximal oxygen usage at redline. I would suggest that oxygen consumption at lactate threshold be a better measure of your progress and I'd suspect if you have been training properly it will have increased. Also improved economy is very important to a marathoner and if you can hold a particular pace for a lower aerobic cost (lower heart rate) I would say you are improving.

I was just reading about this in the Lore of Running last night.
One of the theories he went over was that there are two different types of muscle fibers (sorta) Type I (slowtwitch) and Type II(a-c) (fasttwitch) oh and by the way Type IIc can be converted into Type I due to training and how training specific muscle fibers affects the VO2 max. Looking at the table in the book your VO2 max is doing what it should be. I am not a doctor and might have misinterpreted the information, but what it seemed to be saying was that training your Type II muscle fibers which actually deal more with converting ADP to ATP in a oxygen free state is what increases your VO2 max. So threshold training would up your VO2. I could be wrong. Feel free to check it. Chapter 1 if your interested. More information than you will ever want.

I also got my VO2 Max tests done as well recently.

Back on April first (3 weeks before Boston Marathon), my VO2 Max was at 72.x with Lactate at 165. I did my 2nd VO2 max July 23rd or so and it was 64.6 with Lactate at 163. My goal race is different now (GFT Full Iron Triathlon in October). The only physical difference between the two tests at the time was I was two pounds heavier for the 2nd test.

I guess Andrej and i have a general question in that: does this change mean anything? It has changed my training zones slightly and I generally base everything off my aerobic training zones rather than Lactate. Yet I presume it's just that my muscles have undergone some changes due to my training focus...

the 2lb increase in weight can also lower the figures too...fractional utilization of vo2max is the key......the higher your lactate threshold relative to your vo2 max is the key to predicting performance.
