My training has turned into a 10 week as well. Missed to many early on to count. Got my wetsuit last week and am itching to get out. I did manage to get a spot in the resort to stay, I booked in January and got three spots, all taken though.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding accomodation for Oliver?....looking for something close by for 1 person. (I wont be in a tent or an RV etc) and will be travelling up from Maple Ridge on Saturday.

Also, how are people's training going?....my 18 week plan turned into a 10 week plan!!!....I have been fairly consistent with fitness and running and in the last month more on the bike and running (did a 40km interval session on the bike on Saturday and a 10 mile run on Sunday), but need to knuckle down and get some good sessions in.

My wetsuit (Xterra Vortex 3) arrived last week, so I will get some OWS's in soon, Whonnock Lake is my local lake, but if anyone else can suggest a place close to Maple Ridge that would be appreciated.

Is anyone else doing the BMO 1/2 marathon on 1st May?....I'm just about to sign up this week.

Enough of my rambling!

Cheers

Steve

Check out my post in the previous page - had some links to places to stay.  Let me know if you need info on how to use hotwire or priceline...

Hi Barb,

Thanks for the accomodation info on the previous post and the course info.

Hoping the weather warms up sometime soon and we can get in some long (and dry) rides soon.

I hope everyone's training is going well and look forward to seeing you all in Oliver.

Cheers

Steve

I'm doing the Oliver Oly tri on May 15th.
Has anybody done it in the past? Anything good/bad to say about it?
How's the water temp at that time of the year?

I've done the sprint the last 2 years.  The water was cool but survivable and I'm a HUGE water wuss. This spring has been cool so hopefully it'll warm up soon.  The race is great - I think Outback does a super job of all their races....  I think the lake was around 18-19C at that time.

The Olympic race is awesome!  It is a good prep for the Oliver Half as you can a feel of the course.  My training for the Half has been horrible this year...nothing like a 7 week cram fest!! :D

Please don't let it be windy on race day. I rode from Penticton to Oliver plus one loop of the bike course and my time sucked.  Headwind for 50 km, and I was so bagged by the time we turned around, that I couldn't take full advantage of the tailwind back to Penticton. But the sun has finally arrived in the Okanagan - yay!  18C by the time I got back.

If anyone is looking for accommodation there is a kitchenette suite available at the cactus tree in right in Oliver.  We rented it out last year and it is a really clean little hotel!

Hi Allison,

I may be interested in the accomodation for Saturday night - do you have the details/price etc?

Is it close to the race start line?

Kind regards

Steve

Just over 2 weeks to go until Oliver HIM, how has everyone's training gone so far?

With the crappy weather, I've not managed an OWS yet, hoping to this weekend (whonnock lake) and will probably ride from Mission to Harrison Mills (90-100km) and back to get my last long ride in.

I've never done a HIM before, to the people that have, what is your drink/food strategy for the night before/breakfast/during the race?.......are there bottle exchanges on the bike course?

Hope everyone's training is going well and we are all fit and ready in 2 weeks time.

Cheers

Steve

You will go through 4 bottle exchanges stations on the bike course.  Last year they had water bottles, gatorade bottles and banana halves.  They have one before the hill on black sage which you go through twice and then one on road #7 which you also go through twice.  The first one is around 10km into your ride I believe.  They also have porta potties at both aid stations plus one as you come off of Black Sage Road and turn onto the main road.  Hope this helps!!

I did a small OWS in Whonnock Lake this afternoon, it was cold-ish, but OK with the wetsuit.

Just thought I'd let any locals know in case they wanted an OWS in the near future.

Cheers

Steve

Where abouts is Whonnock Lake?  The lake in Oliver will be in perfect swimming shape come June 5th!  Has to be one of the best lakes to swim in!

Whonnock Lake is near to Maple Ridge in the Lower Mainland  pretty handy for Maple Ridge / Mission/ Langley etc.

Nice lake, I hope that the lake in Oliver is warmer though

I have a question about the swim - I assume that they will let us off in waves (as there will be 1000+ people doing the event) - How many waves will there be and how do they get the timing right for this?

I assume that we already have pre-assigned wave starts and they will start "our clocks" at these times that they let the waves go?

I really do need to book some accomodation, yeah I know I have left it a tad late, but its been crazy busy lately.........any suggestions for a single room, as I'm travelling up by myself?

Cheers

Steve

Just received an update on water temp at Tuc-El-Nuit Lake. 17 deg. at the shore line. Don't know where the heat is coming from as it was only 4 deg. (outside temp) here Fri. morning and daytime highs are only in the high teens.

Thanks Paul, that's promising.  It's supposed to be in the 20's at least some of the time this week. Crossing my fingers. Anything is warmer than the 13C we had a few weeks ago.

Are you racing this year?

Nope. Although I think I'm finally over the back and sciatic issues, two years of sporadic training has taken it's toll on my conditioning. Might try for a race at the end of the season....we'll see.
