They are doing road construction in my devoplment (I say that like the word "Trailer Park" does not exist, leave me to my delusions). Because of the construction I have had to ride out of the park on roads I normally don't bother with. My goal, when riding or running, is to leave Trailerville behind as fast as possible so my neighbors stop laughing at me. Yes they are. I am 100% good with that cause a lot of them are doing it in their jammies and on their fat behinds at 5pm, while munching chips and I am not being mean, just honest.

So I got to see roads I normally don't and that means people I normally do not meet. I was waiting for a truck to back up on Monday, on my way to 20 mile hill hell, when a woman pulls up next to me. She is on an older road bike which was in decent shape. She had a helmet on and toe clips. Actually she had that "Serious about this" feeling to her that makes me smile and say "hello". She smiled too and I mentioned it was a great day for a ride (it was perfect). She then says: "Have you done this a lot? I am training for a triathlon" I am starting to get excited because she lives here AND is trying this too! Woohoo.. what is that smell? She (and I am NOT kidding here) lifts a ciggarette to her lips and takes a HUGE draw. I smiled, said "that's great, good luck with it and I hope to see you out here again" and it was time to go. I didn't get her number cause well.. well 1. I quit a few years ago and the smell makes me want a smoke and 2. YUCK! I am now one of those horrible convert types who thinks no one should smoke but least of all someone who is trying to do a tri.

Now maybe I just offended a huge sect of smoking triathletes who hang here and if so I apologise for getting yer dander up. After all who am I to question someone's filfthy habits? I have my secret Twix addiction (OK so it's not a secret anymore) and know that not all habits are good but still.. I mean.. well ewwwwww.

Not to hijack this thread, but you do not look like a plus size or 41.

Gee thanks! Except I am and I am.. waahhhhh boo hoo.. OK i'm over it. I am a pretty fit fat chick, if I do say so myself. For the record I really don't have that big a problem with the plus size thing. I am what I am and working on it. I can get smaller. I cannot, however, get younger. Which sucks because if I knew then what I know now...

I cannot believe she was actually smoking while working out. I mean, first of all smoking is bad for anyone regardless of if they're trainging for a triathlon, but while she was actually out for a ride? That is just crazy.

When I was in Italy, I saw that 100 times. Guys were decked in PROFESSIONAL cycling gear (top of the line bikes, full team unis, etc.), and probably riding at 15 mph or so (coasting for them) with cigs dangling from their lips. It was ridiculous.

Me either.  I think you look similar to Rene Zellwegger (sp?)

But along the lines of your post, I just quit smoking about 2 1/2 months ago.  I told myself "Ok, Katie...if you decide after your first race to continue training and racing, you have to quit smoking."  I think a part of me desperitely hoped that I wouldn't like the sport because I freaked out at the thought of quitting.  Honestly, though.  The first 5 days were PURE HELL!  After that, it is much easier.

Well back in the early Tour de France days (before the war) the riders would actually smoke cigarettes while climbing Alpe d' Huez an the other major climbs or the Tour, and sometimes would smoke while not even climbling. heres a picture of a few riders sharing a cigarette

Shoot, even when I used to smoke I tried to abstain for up to 4 hours before my (non-cardio usually) workout.  People used to ask me why I bothered to work out when I smoked and my reply for them usually was that because I smoked I needed to work out even more.

Now that I've quit (5 years, 5 months ago) it's all I can do to wonder why I put up with feeling like crap for so long!

Yeah it sucks when you trade one addiction for another Renee Zellwegger.. snort.. that's a good one. I sort of look like... well no one. You know I have never been compared to anyone famous.. well one time, when I was really fat, a man came up to me in the parking lot and insisted I was Roseanne Barr. He was so drunk the smell of booze was coming off him in waves. He was really nasty when I would not give him my autograph. I never quite knew what to make of that.

I live in California where so few people smoke anymore, let alone athletes. That story cracked me up. Although, I am sorry that your 15 second idea of a new TP were squashed, literally, in a cloud of smoke.....

Btw, I am a "housing development" denizen, as well. I was a 30 year old single woman living in Silicon Valley at the height of the boom. I'll take my 1600 square feet and postage stamp yard over a 600sqft condo sharing walls any day!! I call mine a "gated community" :-). Well it is!
