Ironman
Total Time = 4h 53m 33s
Overall Rank = 755/1754
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 54/170
Pre-race routine:

Got there early, heard right away that swim was cancelled, then tried to figure out how to spend at least 2.5 hours until I'd start, since wave was near the end. Routine was totally off due to no swim. Did get well hydrated and took in 700 calories for breakfast and 200 calories in gel about an hour from starting, as I'd planned for a normal race.
Event warmup:

Just a little stretching.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 2112 meters
  • / 100 meters
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 2h 45m 26s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.27 mile/hr
Comments:

So packed with people due to the weird start. Probably the most challenging ride this course could be with the big wind and packed conditions.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder, probably should have been five minutes faster.
Transition 2
  • 05m 38s
Comments:

Needed a BR break, had to wait a while - cost me three spots in the results.
Run
  • 2h 02m 29s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder and get under 2 hours, could have done it but I didn't realize it until it was over. Being the longest run of my life, I learned a lot.
Post race
Warm down:

Laid in the shade under a tree in Jackson Square for a little while, then got some pizza and soda and then came back to meet my friend at the finish, who I knew was about 50 minutes behind me from seeing her on the run. Enjoyed the finish line scene, which was a lot of fun in the heart of the city.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Got a little soft at times on the bike, but mostly raced exactly as planned. I know a little more about what I can do now for next time.

Event comments:

I would have much preferred to do a triathlon, but still enjoyed the day and got a lot out of it as far as prep for CDA. Next stop Idaho.

HR averaged 135, 190w normalized power. Tough race due to a strong 20+ headwind from the east on a mainly east west route. Good power pacing practice and worked out pretty well. Starting so far back with everyone packed together due to no swim was an adventure, after first 10 miles it was pretty much passing people non stop - good thing there were no cars. This was a challenging ride and I'm happy with how it went, particularly that I felt strong the whole time. Could have gone a little harder, but I didn't know that at the time.

Course: Closed roads, mostly flat, a few overpasses. Perfect for running aero almost the whole time.

Dead flat course in ideal weather, pacing was really good. Ran to HR of mid z2, with my top priority for this race being to run every step, which I met. Middle six miles were within 5 seconds of each other.
Course: A nice long run through New Orleans on closed roads with great support and spectators. Really enjoyed it.
