New user 148 Savannah, GA | Subject: Savannah Rock & Roll Marathon course announced The course for the Savannah Rock and Roll marathon was announced tonight. It's posted on one of the local news sites. You can download the map as well as turn by turn instructions. http://savannahnow.com/latest-news/2011-04-26/savannah-rock-n-roll-marathon-route-announced It's not exactly what I expected, but close. We do hit some of the sites, but the biggest surprise is that there are also several miles of running down the Truman Parkway (basically an expressway). I'm thinking the first half mile, mile 7, 13.5-14.5 and miles 16-20 will be the prettiest. Some of the rest won't be that exacting, but I'm thinking it's still a pretty good course. It's easy to say afterward what could have made it better, but I'm sure that was considered since the local running store owner was involved in developing the course. It also won't be as completely flat as I thought it would be. For us here in Savannah, those on/off ramps are big hills! (Still, probably 90% of the course is flat though!) |

This is what I am targeting for a fall marathon. Crossing my fingers that I will finally have a good marathon training cycle ( and cooperative weather) and run a pr already. |

Expert 1322 Savannah | Subject: RE: Savannah Rock & Roll Marathon course announced I'm bummed because this race is the same day as IMFL. I live in Savannah and have been anticipating this race for some time. When I saw the dates I was crushed. But there is always next year |

Expert 1128 Fort Riley, Kansas | Subject: RE: Savannah Rock & Roll Marathon course announced Since we could possibly be getting reassigned to Fort Drum in New York within the next few months, if I do this race I will be a last minute entrant. If I do it will probably be the half marathon, since it is only 10 weeks after Ironman Louisville. Good thing about that, if we still live here, my husband was planning on doing the half marathon, so it will be our first race together. |

My wife and I have done several 5ks together, and I recommend it (even if I have to run at her pace, it's cool to get to do it together). The nice thing about this is even if you decided to go for the full, you could probably still run the first 11 miles together. It seems like the nicest parts of the course are on the marathon route though. It's not really all that exciting of a half marathon course, comparitively speaking. 100 | Subject: RE: Savannah Rock & Roll Marathon course announced Hopefully the band between miles 22 and 23 will break up the monotony of the return leg on the parkway. That's one of the worse points in the race for me, and about the last point during of which I would want to be on the parkway. Only 2 GU stations. Looks like I'll be carrying the first one a few miles. Not sure why so many people these days think they need to shoot a GU pack for a 5 or 10K race. They should move that first station out past the half turn off imho. |

If the second half is better than the first, that would represent a significant change from other Rock-n-Roll marathons. I have run a few of these and RNR usually go with the utilitarian approach of making the half fairly scenic while cramming in the last half wherever it can fit - Nashville (out and back to run around a park); New Orleans (run around a park); Vegas (out and back away from the strip). This is understandable given that the ratio of full to half runners is usually around 1-3 or 1-4. RNR usually does a good job putting on a certain type of race (urban, lots of spectators and live music, organized), and this one should be no exception.

The start, middle and finish of the half will all pass through the historic area, but the in between areas are kind of ghetto. I went back through Google Maps and looked at some of the areas I don't typically go to, and they're a little better than I initially thought. Thinking about it more...there are only two ways to get from Savannah and the westside out to the islands - islands expressway from downtown or Victory Drive (hwy 80). Since downtown was going is going to be nearly impossible to get through with 15000 people running, they probably had to leave Victory open to traffic. That means the only way to get to the southside and some of the other scenic areas would be to take the Truman, which goes over the top of Victory (which is what the marathon does). I guess they were trying to keep the half from having to do that, and the best area of downtown is only one square mile, which means most of the run has to be in the surrounding areas. Guess I never thought about how complicated it would be get 26.2 miles without completely shutting down the city. I'm sure it's going to be a fun race. I've been signed up since December, and am looking forward to it!

I found out because it was in the paper here in Savannah. Either them or our running store (Fleet Feet) have been announcing the number whenever it hits some sort of milestone. |

New user 148 Savannah, GA | Subject: RE: Savannah Rock & Roll Marathon course announced It was announced the other night that this race is sold out! Runners from all 50 states and 20 countries will be among the 23,000 entrants. Only 2,300 runners are local and two-thirds of participants will be traveling to Savannah from outside the state of Georgia, so it's no wonder that hotels are hard to come by. |

Looks like the AVIA hotel--owned by Hyatt has rooms for $329/night. http://aviasavannah.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp?extCorporateId= It's only 2 blocks away from the race start. |
