Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep that well, was nervous about having everything ready to go in the morning. My goggles had broken and I had bought new ones but not tried them, my tire had a slow leak, and I wanted to make sure everything was ready. Ended up going to the pool about 10 the night before and just doing a couple of quick laps after changing the tube and taping over a small wire on the inside of the tire.

In the morning got up at 4 and after loading the car had Peanut butter sandwich, banana and coffee.
Event warmup:

After settng up the transition area I ran about a 10th of a mile on the grass barefoot. Additional warm up was gotten by waiting in line for the porta potty.

  • 600 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards

Time is a bit of a guess as my time wasn't recorded coming out of the water. I did 15:55 out of T1 and if I was average T1 should have been about 1:30.

I found it hard to get clear in a few places, especially when people stood up in front of me and just stopped. My sighting was ok, but I veered a bit to the inside or outside a few times and probably added an additional 25-50 meters over the swim.

Someone hit my timing chip early on and I was worried about loosing it the rest of the time.

I probably should have not tried to walk out till I got right to the edge, the whole lake was shallow, but it was muddy near the ramp and that wasn't helpful either.
What would you do differently?:

Might try to start a bit more MOP or FOP. Try to site a bit more often. Don't walk in muddy waters.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s

Forgot my talcum so socks/shoes were harder to get on. There were burs on my socks so I wasted a few seconds taking them off.
What would you do differently?:

Chip didn't pick me up coming out of the swim, so fix that... if I knew how. Maybe go sockless ... certainly check them for burs in a grassy situation when setting up Transition.

  • 16.22 mile/hr

Even with the new bike I only averaged about 16.2 mph. That is a significant improvement over Kemah, and i did 16 miles in less than it took me to do 12 there, but I still felt like I was way slower than I should have been.

I know being a clyde (though I may not be one for much longer) I pick up a lot of wind resistance... and I know that a Road bike with no areo bars isn't optimal, but I would have liked to pass someone who hadn't passed me already.

Really I need more time on the bike, especially now that I have a garmin so I know how I'm doing.

I had 2 water bottles that I bought the other day and meant to get 2 bottles of water with squirt tops from the store on the night before but didn't. I ended up givng my wife both the bottles with sqiurt tops and just putting poweraid with twist off tops on my bike. This slowed me down everytime I wanted to take a drink, and reduced how often I drank
What would you do differently?:

I would, and will get more water bottles. I'll spend more time on the bike, and probably get clipless pedals before my next tri.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s

No bike shoes yet so just racked the bike, took off the helmet and grabbed some water (I had a small screw top water bottle in transition but it was too small to trust on the bike).

We didn't have assigned rack slots and someone else had racked there bike over the top of my stuff, took a second to slide it to where my bike was.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water on the bike, maybe have some nutrition on the bike as well. Not really required, but might have helped quench thirst etc.

  • 4 miles
  • 11m  min/mile

First, the official results have me as DNF, but i did cross the finish line at approximately 2 hours after my start time so my actual run time is a bit of a guess.

I started out strong even though I came off the bike pretty tired. Before I got to the end of the first 3/4 mile section I was afraid I was going to end up walking. I tried to make it to the second pass at the water stop before walking, but didn't get that far. I made it about 2 miles of the 4 and walked / ran the rest. I suspect I walked at least a half a mile in the last 2.
What would you do differently?:

Probably come in more hydrated, but more importantly more prepared. Take it a bit slower on the run at first. Pacing myself isn't my strong suit yet.
Post race
Warm down:

Wandered around and ate some pizza sticks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training and preparation for the hydration on the bike. Wind.

Event comments:

I am not too fond of running loops, especially not on a feeder road.

Riding on the inside lane reduces the number of traffic cross overs to worry about, but it also meant that we had to cross traffic to get back in the inside lane at the turn aroound. If the turn around had been in the center (like the super sprint was) that could have been different.

The lake was a little too shallow, but would probably be better in a year with more rain. However, that was good for my wife who got through the Super sprint successfully.
I only have 2 races to compare but I'll say that the Kemah race site and handout was much more polished. However, this seems like a much smaller race.

Course: Circle around some cones. Very shallow course there were several points, even at the farthest out from the dock, where someone in front of me was walking. You could not tread water if you stoped because your feet would be on the ground. Fairly clear lake, I could see the bottom at times, but it was overcast and a lot of mud was being kicked up or I think it would have been easier to see. There was a fair amount of vegetation we were swimming through.

Sounds like a tough day with the wind.  Good job sticking it out.  Keep riding that bike!  It does get easier.
