5150 Triathlon Series
80F / 27C
Total Time = 2h 49m 49s
Overall Rank = 1760/
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 135/
Pre-race routine:

This was my first tri so no routine, just walked around and talked to people, watched the pros swim and run to transition.
Event warmup:

  • 19m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 10s / 100 yards

Didn't listen to all the great advice and tried to start towards the front. Adrenaline hit as we dashed to the water, thought here we go 10 weeks of trianing for this. Didn't get kicked too bad but couldn't get into a rhythm with so many people swimming around me. Kept looking up to see where the first buoy was and in the process swalloed a ton of air (yes air - had to burp the rest of the swim), finally dropped back from the pack and was able to put my head down and get into rhythm. At one point it seemed I might be last because no one was next to me but I didn't want to turn around and confirm, eventually passed a light blue cap (the wave before me) and that was a great confidence booster. Of course I subsequently got passed by a yellow cap (the wave behind me), ohwell.
What would you do differently?:

Listen to the advice - start farther back if you're a noob.
Transition 1
  • 06m 20s

About a 1/4 mile run from swim out to transition, just jogged. Got passed and passed some. I had everything laid out and went over my routine in my head as I was jogging. Probably wasn't a great time, but no issues everything went smooth.
What would you do differently?:

  • 1h 21m 58s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.19 mile/hr

I was using a rented road bike so I wasn't sure what to expect. I had been training on a mountain bike on which I would average about 15.5 so I was very happy to be 18+ on the roadie. Got passed alot and admired all the 40 year olds with their carbon bikes. Just focused on cruising and hydrating, wanted to be relatively fresh for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 2
  • 02m 33s

Easy dismount, jogged with the bike to my spot. Somehow the other bikes around me made it difficult to re-rack but eventually I got it done. Swapped the helmet for a visor and popped on the running shoes with quick laces and out I went.
What would you do differently?:

  • 59m 44s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 37s  min/mile

It was starting to get hot, stopped at almost every water station. Tried to keep a casual pace the first half. Ended up 3 min quicker on split so that was great. Wanted to walk at the end but forced myself to keep going, lots of fan support, people sitting in front yards cheering you on and spraying you with hoses. As soon as I saw the finish I did a full on sprint so I guess I could have run a bit faster.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, very happy with sub 10 min/mile and negative split.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice cold towels and soon as you cross the finish line - awesome. Cold beer by the bay - even better.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First tri - followed a 10 week plan, probably did about 80% of the workouts. Obviously you get out what you put in. The next day my legs are little sore but I'm not hurting, that's a nice feeling.

Event comments:

This is a great race for a beginner, the course is very well marked and there are tons of volunteers to help. After race activities were very good (better than Disney marathons). If I continue to tri I will probably sign up for this race again.

Great job! It was a great race. You should edit your RR to show the swim distance to be 1000 since they shortened it. You might want to compare later.
