Event warmup:

1 mile warmup run. Had taken the last 3 days off to get ready and was feeling pretty loose and energetic. I guess it worked.
Run
  • 2h 07m 43s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out a little slower than planned and picked up the pace around mile 3. By mile 11 my calf's were wanting to cramp so I slowed way down and tried to fight it off knowing I was close to finishing.

Mile 12 it was to late and the cramps were in full effect. I would get one cramp to subside then the other would lock up giving me "Monkey Toes". Ackk!

Mile 1: 9:40
Mile 2: 9:29
Mile 3: 9:16
Mile 4: 9:15
Mile 5: 9:18
Mile 6: 9:16
Mile 7: 9:21
Mile 8: 9:57
Mile 9: 9:27
Mile 10: 9:28
Mile 11: 10:49 - Cramps are threatening
Mile 12: 11:32 - Cramps in both calf's
Mile 13: 1:41 - Finish Line!

What would you do differently?:

Train Smarter!!!

Warm down:

My Wife was walking the course today with my FIL. He just had Heart Surgery last year so this was a big deal. The kids were still at home so I told her I would run home and get them after I finished then come back to meet them. This meant no time to celebrate and I just run/walked to the car about a mile away and raced home to pick up the kids. Son grabbed me a Cliff bar and a soda as I was tired of water and headed back down to the finish. Had to park about a mile away again and run/walk to the finish. Wife and FIL crossed the finish about 10 minutes later and we eventually made our way to the beer booth and enjoyed a nice well deserved recovery drink...or two.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My longest run leading up to this was 1 month prior at 10 miles. Missed every long run in the weeks prior. Do NOT ever do this again. I think I could have finished sub 2 hour if I just freaking train properly.

Event comments:

Never ever forget to put bandaids over the nipples again. Typically I am good about being organized but for some reason this particular morning I was really scatter brained and paid a price for it later.

Course: They changed the course this year and while I was a bit dissappointed at first because they eliminated the park in the end I was glad there were no hills. This course was really flat and fast.

Congrats on your race Brian!  It was a perfect day out there.  And the free drink ticket was good motivation to get to the finish line!

I have been taking 2 advil prior to any workout exceeding 2 hours for 3 years now.  Likely a placebo effect but I don't know of any health risk.  It seems like I read somewhere that it could mask pain and hide injury which makes sense.  Although masking pain is exactly why I take 2 of them.  Should I be taking them, dunno.

Sounds like a good day, and solid run until the cramping thing.  Monkey toes made me laugh! Great victory for your FIL.
