Hi,

I am heading to Sanibel Island for 3 days in mid-May. I haven't been there since I was a kid so does anyone have any recommendations on restaurants, excursions, can't-miss activities, etc?  I'll be there with my wife, infant, and inlaws (who will hopefully babysit some!).

Hey Ryan,

We were just there in November with our two year old.  We spent most of our time there biking around the island.  Alvin's Bicycles is where we rented our bikes from. The have trailers and those backseat thingies for the kiddos to ride in.  Our 2 year old loved it.  We would bike to the market and get a picnic lunch and then bike further on to the beach.  Lots of seashells that you can collect.  Wear sandels or beach shoes! Not quite a barefoot beach.  There's also a nature preserve that you can either drive or bike if you want to go birding.  The preserve also has a great kayak tour.

Otherwise, it's Florida! Go to the beach!

Having just returned from Sanibel myself, how was your trip? What did you do, besides shelling? Whihc places did you go to eat?

Anyone do OWS off the beach? We're planning on going for Thanksgiving. Is it safe to swim along the beach? I'm not really an ocean person, so please convince me nothing will eat me. Any other tips? We will be staying with relatives and have cruiser bikes. Thanks!

I've done plenty of OWS in the gulf in that area. It's fantastic.

So far I haven't been eaten by anything.. :=)

Wondering what the current might be like in November.

We usually travel to the coast during the summer and it's very calm.

I haven't been there in the fall. But during the summer, the only thing that will eat you in Sanibel is the "no see 'ems" (knats!). Carry bug spray repellant. Eat at the Bubble Room and The Mucky Duck on Captiva is where everyone congregates to watch the sun go down.

Cool

Thank you for the responses!  I will pack my wetsuit and tell my brother to be ready to swim :-)
