Pre-race routine:

Ok, so this is a race that I organized for some friends who had an interest in triathlons but just wouldn't take that step to actually enter and train for one. Which is why it is a mini sprint. The entry fee was a 6 pack of beer and everyone was invited to stay and have a pool party after the tri. There was no formal timing or whatever, we jumped in and first one to finish won and got the beer, but we all drank it.
With that said, my pre-race routine consisted of arriving at my parent's house at 7am after stopping by a friend's house to pick up a kayak. I had to set up the swim course off the dock. I hopped in the kayak and started stringing out bouys. Since I am the only one who had any confidence in making the full 200 yards I had to put a ski tube and an inflatable raft at the 50 and 100 yard marks for people to hold onto. By the time the race was about to start I was exhausted from setting up.
Event warmup:

Running around like mad trying to make sure the swim course was set up, the boat was in the water and running, my transition was setup, the bike course was marked and everyone knew where the run turnaround was. I was tired when I woke up, only ate one granola bar and sipped water, so I was beat. I was wearing a tri top and some cycling shorts for the whole event, so no need to get into a wetsuit. I put on my hat, goggles and earplugs and stretched my arms a little as we lined up on the dock.

Comments:

So dad honked the boat horn and off we went. I knew I had to shoot off the dock like a rocket to try to get away from everyone. I'm not the fastest swimmer of the bunch... Actually I'm probably the slowest, but I have the best endurance. I pushed really hard the first 50 yards and could feel that I was bumping into the other guys. Thankfully after the first 75 all but one burned themselves out trying to keep up. I put it on cruise control coming around the halfway mark and just started sighting the beach. About 20 yards from the beach my right arm came down on top of Ben's head, I had been breathing to the left and didn't see him creep up on my right. I said hi, then shot out in front and hit the beach a foot or two in front of him. I felt good coming out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Trying to swim really fast at the start made me mess up on my form and kicking. So as a result I think I actually swam slower. With that exertion at the gym I'm usually good for a 1:45 or 1:50, which is why I think the swim may have been a bit long, or my form was that messed up. But the fact that I stayed with the guys, even knowing I swim slower, makes me think I messed up on the course layout. I also know I am faster when I breath bilaterally every 3 strokes, but trying to go fast I was breathing unilaterally.

Comments:

This was a fast T1 for me. I'm not sure on the exact time, so I just put one minute. I didn't have a wetsuit so I just slipped into my bike shoes and took off. The run from the beach was short as well.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to mount the bike with the shoes already clipped in. I had to climb a short, steep hill up the driveway right away so it was important to have my shoes clipped in, lost a few seconds making sure I was in.

Comments:

I have ridden this course many times to get ready for this tri because I know how hilly the course is. I came out of the water first but knew it would be a miracle if I could hold off all the guys for the entire 10 miles. My legs burned almost the entire 10 miles, but I did see 21mph on a slight decline and 25 on a downhill. I managed to hold off two guys for a lap and a half before they came screaming past. With about a quarter of a lap to go the third guy passed me but I managed to keep him in sight until transition. The fourth guy had dropped out after the swim. It was kinda cool to be behind the pace car, felt like my little ironman world championships... but then the tail car was behind me at the end, not such a great feeling.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. Get out of the saddle more and power up the hills. I did some, but I'm more of a sit and spin person than a stand and climb. I need to learn when to do each. Also, grit my teeth and just GO. It's going to hurt, it's supposed to hurt, but if I do it harder and more it will hurt when I go faster.
Transition 2

Comments:

Unclipped my shoes as I rode down the driveway, rode up to my spot, jumped off and let the bike fall in the bushes. Off came the helmet and shoes. I put on my right sock and shoe, then put my left sock on upside down, so had to pull it off, then it was inside out. I finally got that situated and got my shoes on. Mom handed me a bottle of cold water for the run and I walked to the top of the driveway. I was already in last place and knew I couldn't catch the guys on the run so I was taking my time.
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn to run without socks. I rolled my socks up to make them easy to put on, but that doesn't help when I put one on upside down. Also my yankz laces are a bit too tight and that makes it hard to get my shoe on. I have since loosened them.

Comments:

And this is where my legs and mind failed me. Right out of transition is a big hill, my calves were already threatening bad things, so I walked a good bit of the first quarter mile. A little less than 3/4 of a mile in I finally got my legs under me and was able to finish with a jog, actually getting faster the longer I ran. I was almost a mile into the run when Chris, the leader, passed me heading back to the finish. About a quarter of a mile later I passed Eric and Ben on their way back. It was a lonely run and I figured they would send a search party for me. With less than a quarter mile to go my dad comes around the corner on his little red scooter looking for me. He escorted me to the finish where amazing everyone was still waiting to cheer me in. I was ready to be done, but physically felt pretty darn good. It was my own race... and I finished last. Haha!
What would you do differently?:

Learn to run faster dangit! Even on a good day I do good to get into the low 10 minute miles. I need more speedwork and more bike/run bricks. I also just need to BELIEVE that I can run faster. My mind holds me back because I don't want to blow.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out by the pool eating fruit and drinking beer. Mom fixed a feast for all of us. We spent the afternoon rehashing the race and watching the kids swim. Great day for everyone.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Myself and my training. For some reason I'm afraid to really push myself to go faster. Going farther I can do, but at my own pace. I need more speedwork, intervals and tempo runs.
Also, I was tired before the race started. I had to setup everything and had been stressed for days over this.

Event comments:

Of course I'm going to rate the race the best... it was MY race. In all seriousness, I was very thankful to my parents for allowing my friends and me to invade their house for the day. Mom made a huge feast for us and dad was nice enough to put out signs for the bike course and follow us in the boat for the swim so no one died. We also had spouses/friends in cars lead and follow us on the bike... which was a really cool feeling.
