Don't mean to be a negative nelly here but...make sure you have your garmin.  There are no mile markers on the run.  And make sure you know where the nearest hospital is because if you go to the med tent...they won't have a clue.

I ended up having an asthma attack...and no one could tell us where the hospital was.

I'm in. This will be my 4th. I think I keep doing it to Gage where my fitness is at each year.

It is at a state park so other than a neighborhood of lake homes not much near the race.

Swim: due to the size of the lake usually a fair amt. of wind. Especially last year the swim was in very rough waters. Good news is that it must have blown a buoy in because I have never had a faster time.

Bike: Nice ride with some good rollers. Due to the wind the last five miles have always been the hardest for me even though it is a flat section. Last year the first aid station wasn't maned when I went through so be prepared with nutrition.

Run: After the big signature hill there are just a few short ups. It is a two loop trail run with everything from trails through the trees to a field and be ready for the last section on the rocks that can be slick and always takes some runners down. Then down the hill to the finish. Aid on the run can be hit or miss as well depending when you go through so I always carry a small hand held bottle.

My main complaints are the aid stations, very few mile markers on the run and they take down the transition area before many people are even done! Otherwise I like the race itself. Check out race reports for more gems.

I'm in for my 5th year for HIM (6 if you count the sprint I did) There is a possibility I might slide down to sprint because at this stage I am woefully unprepared for HIM bike distance.  I keep doing this race because I enjoy the challenge of the course. The swim course is almost always wavey, with last year being real exciting with 4 foot waves. Bike is beautiful with some nice rollers, but no massive hills (except 1st one out of transition). Run is basically a trail run, with some roads thrown in for fun. I agree with the sentiments of others on how this race is run.  I have my Garmin and I pack all the hydration and nutrition I need.  I have learned the hard way, not to count on the nutrition/hydration provided.

FYI - there were no bathrooms on the run course last year and only one port a potty coming out of transition.  Go when you can   They suggest you use the bathrooms in the campground but these are off the course.

ARe you kiddin'? That is awful!! I mean heck you'd think the volunteers were local.

I've done the sprint 2x. Would like to again but hub works Saturdays. One thing that I remember that I didn't expect.... that LOOOOOONG run up the hill from the swim to transition Whew! Also, just keep an eye on weather cuz it can be chilly in the am with winds off the lake. (well, chilly to me).

Seems kinda odd that the support isn't there, and they tear down a bit too early, and they've been around this long?

not an excuse but there really isn't a hospital with in approx 45 min of the race site.

the taking down of transition(and in some cases the finish chute) at events by mid west sport events is a very common thing, i have people take my bike out of there/take other friends bikes out of transition and put them in cars because there is NO security or check's and anybody can leave with any body's bike.... : / not cool with the investments people have into their bikes.

OK, I'm sure the volunteers(and paid employees) of Midwest sport events want to enjoy their weekend as much as the next, if thats the case don't volunteer or work there its terrible to be tearing the event down when there are still people on the course!!

I live basically across from High Cliff on the upper side of Lake Winnebago. There ARE hospitals close by:

Hospitals/medical centers near Sherwood:

  • ST ELIZABETH HOSPITAL 88 (about 8 miles; APPLETON, WI)
  • APPLETON MEDICAL CENTER (about 10 miles; APPLETON, WI)
  • THEDA CLARK AND CHILDRENS HOSPITAL OF WI FOX VALLEY (about 11 miles; NEENAH, WI)

I'm out. I'll be racing my mountain bike down Nordic Mountain instead. I've skipped one of Wisconsin's only DH races every year since moving here to do High Cliff. This year I'm going back to my roots.

As far as the run goes, what's the big deal if there are no/few markers? You go up the hill, around the loop 2 times and back down the hill. The half way point is when you start the second lap on the loop. Maybe I've just run there enough that I know where I am on the loop that it doesn't bother me.

The lake can throw some waves at you. Last year was fantastic.

Swim was short last year, don't know if they did it due to the waves, or if the bouy furthest out came in due to the waves or if they just miscalculated, however I felt it was fair due to the size of the waves. Hopefully they stop tearing everything down early, really sucks for first timers etc. I like trail run b/c it is mostly out of the sun.
