I did my first half last year. Doing my second half in six weeks. I don't wear race belt during the run - though I did carry a small water bottle (but then I knew the organisers would have water and coke and bananas at 2.5 km intervals - which is plenty frequent enough ).
My theory (for the half anyway ) is that if you don't eat and drink right on the bike, there is probably nothing you can do to get you through the run. So I really ate up on the bike (my 300 cals/hr ) and got my max of 800 ml fluid/hr. Then I took a gel at T2, and then only fluids (water and flat coke ) during the run.
I hate running while carrying anything and also have found race belts really uncomfortable.... I don't intend to even carry a water bottle during the run on my coming half....
But personal choice. pays to experiment a little.
