Just to clarify its 43miles each way.

I will be looking for a Gym in the area where I can shower. The commute itself is from the south end of where I live to the north end of Toronto. Traffic lights are minimal so it would be a decent ride. As far as speed goes I would be looking at the pace I ride on my long rides.

My commute is around 30 miles one way, though if I avoid the freeway, which is farther but faster and take just surface streets it can be more like 25-28.  I'm really trying to figure out a way to ride my bike one day a week, perhaps two.  I have showers at work and places I can store the bike.  I just don't trust the roads I'd be forced to take.  Not many are bike friendly, often narrow and winding.  If I can keep studying the map and come up with a suitable route I might still give it a go.

My commute to work is not quite that far but close...35-miles one way. I work 10-hour days so it's not something that I can do often but last year I think I commuted by bike at least 10x. I leave the house about 400am and there are showers at my office. So I can usually be done with the commute, showered and at my desk by 630am. If I leave work at 500 and have a tailwind I might be home by 700. But usually it's closer to 730. I have a family so that impacts on if I can ride or not as well. Kids will be out of school soon so that might help me schedule a ride to/from work. For various reasons I have not made the commute yet in 2011. Maybe this Friday?

As far as leaving the car at work and riding home and then back in the next day. I've done that but my body seems to enjoy it more when I do the commute to/from better on the same day. Also, I consider my work commute a training ride...at least portions of it.

Just touching on the last part of this, i'm not really doing anything but biking/rowing at the moment, and i've noticed that the 2nd ride on double days feels much better than riding again the next morning. first 15-20 min of the 2nd one suck but then it normally ends up being the better of the two /

yep. Same for me. The ride home always seems to be fairly strong (even though slower because of more traffic and elevation gain. Early the next morning after riding home I just can't seem to get my body to want to cooperate.

yep, same. Although i almost never have good morning workouts and thus tend to save the harder ones for the afternoon.

To the OP, as long as your fitness is there, a few times a week of going both ways should be fine. two hours AM and two PM (assuming that is all of your training) is not going to kill you.

Well the first half of the commute has gone fairly well, excellent infact. I did miss a fairly minor turn but arrived at work, had a shower at a nearby truck stop and sat under a tree for 15 minutes until someone came to unlock the front door.

Over all it was a strong ride taking almost exactly 2.5 hours for 80km so an average speed of 32km/h. Best yet, I spent a good amount of time fitting my bike better. I ended up raising the seat, lowering the bars and ended with a lower possition and no hint of any back pain at the end of the ride.

The ride back will be the true test but so far I am very pleased.

made it back home in 2hours 36minutes. Not bad considering it was much hotter in the afternoon. I think I may repeat the ride weekly.

I wish I could bike commute, but it just doesn't work for me. Good job giving it a try! Sounds like you have a good plan and can make it work.

Great job!  In one commute, you did more miles than I get in 2 months of commuting to work, and I ride everyday.....

Thanks, I am happy as it seems to be an easy way to get in the biking while at the same time freeing up time to devote to running.

My commute is 12 miles OW... so when I ride to work, it is always to do a long ride on the way home. Commuting saves time. You need the miles, and you need to get to work, so this condenses things.... but ya, a 40 mile commute is a lot of time in one day. Easily 5 hours after it's all said and done. If you have 5 hours in a work day go for it.

If you split it overnight then that is really 2 40 mile rides back to back. Still back to back in one day, but it's one day... you can rest one day. Certaily you can do it, probably not that often. Once a week would satisfy long rides and free up your weekend.

I commuted 32 r/t with about 1000ft in elevation back when I was doing it fulltime. That was too much 5x a week. Legs were shot by Wed. Not enough recovery Sat/Sun. Doing two a days is not the best way to get milage. But once a week would be fine. I would probably do it.
