Subject: Considering the Insane: time to get started?

So I have been thinking and looking and contemplating things lately. I really like Triathlon, and want to do a HIM and eventually an IM someday. but there is a lot standing in my way, things like needing a decent bike (something other than my trek hybrid - which is fine for sprint and even olys but not longer distances) Also due to a recent injury which kept me from running, I realized that over the last year I have really come to enjoy just getting outside and running. Given all of this I started to look into long term motivational goals to focus on other than Ironmans.

In looking what I found was what could be a decent step system to ultra running through strictly local races. I just want to throw this out and see what people think of the timeline or if it could use some adjustment.

there is a Half Marathon around August 6th, 2011. follow that up with the Seattle Marathon in November. Then I would have a long winter and spring of running and slowly increasing Mileage. The first weekend of June 2012 there is a 50 miler (Rainier to Ruston) and hopefully follow that up with the cascade crest 100 at the end of August.

The farthest I have run before was a half Marathon last year and I am currently starting to build my miles up again as I slowly recover from an injury. So does this plan sound solid if I can dedicate myself to the training and put in the time? Or would it be wiser to put off the cascade crest for a further year out, till 2013?

Thoughts, comments, ideas, encouragements, all accepted.

Sounds totally doable to me.  Just listen to your body as you log longer miles and if it is too much, you may need to put off the long races for another year.  By the way, the Cascade Crest is a great race.  Ran it last year and loved it.

I am thinking long term of doing a 100. This year I am doing a 50K, next year a 50 mile. After that I will see how my body does and start planning for the 100. I think if the 50 goes well you could think about the 100 earlyer.

sounds like a good plan to me. Do you log your workouts here?

yes but not regularly. I do not have the time for it often, though since I got my garmin just before injuring myself it will be easier to log my runs at least so I will probably start doing that consistantly. I am really interested to try this as I have pushed my body to do a lot of things (and sometimes I pay for it) but never anything quite this ambitious.

Is that the Tacoma Narrows Half Marathon that you're looking at on August 6th?

Yup, the one you told me about looks like a good race and since my half on June 6th got messed up from my injury and my oral surgery a month or two ago I decided to switch to that one. Still going to do the June one but more of a run walk, simply to finish it and be able to wear my shirt instead of feeling like a cheater. (the June half usually has some really good race shirts)

Cool! Maybe we can meet up, or carpool, or something. Lisa and my daughter will be there also (but they're not running).

That would be fun my wife is planning on running it too. just sounds like such a great course, except for the jumbotron part at Cheney stadium. The timing is also just about perfect. (speaking of which we need to get to fleet feet and register soon)
