I rode my mountain bike on the road last weekend going ot my favorite trail which was ~15 miles from the house.

Imagine how silly I looked riding home with me and my bike covered in mud Laughing

Who cares what others think?  Go and enjoy yourself.

Tiffanator - 2011-05-27 11:34 AM The only ones who should feel silly are the ones on expensive road bikes that you pass... Like me, although my road bike wasn't expensive and I do not kid myself into thinking I'm faster than a mountain biker. Keep doing what you are doing and have fun.

X2 I trained on my MTB for the first 2 years in the sport. I used to love breezing by the roadies decked out in their spandex! Now I am one

Back then my training rides were in gym shorts and a t-shirt and would take me all kinds of places you can't get to with a road -bike. It was arguably a lot more fun...I think i've just convinced myself to go for a MTB ride this weekend!

before the thought of doing a tri ever came into my mind i would ride my mtb on the street all  the time. air up the tires to 65psi and go. i have been on rides as long as 60 miles, and i have climbed some pretty gnarly hills as well.

I was able to borrow a nice road bike for my first tri and did notice a significant difference in overall speed (did train with it for a couple weeks beforehand). you will still benefit from training with the mtb, but if you can rent a bike for a tri, maybe even for a weekend training ride beforehand, your overall results of the tri should be better.
