Age Group Rank = 11/36
Pre-race routine:

Got all set up and put up the club tent. Put on the wetsuit and got in the water to "warm up". It was pretty cold out and raining a little bit. Low 50's
Event warmup:

Swam out to a buoy and back. Tried to get the shoulders loose and get the suit sitting correctly.
Swim
  • 07m 53s
  • 587 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Although my swim time was fast in this race, it felt horrible. I picked the wrong guy to follow right out of the gate. I knew this guy was fast in the water from talking to him, but when the gun went off, I ran and dove after him. Within 100m he was gone. I looked up to find him and he was almost 25m ahead of me already. Turns out he had the fastest swim time of the day....great choice on my part. The guy was cruising. So I went back to the idea that I would wait for a faster person to come up and I would jump on their feet. Well that didn't happen either. A friend of mine came up on my right, also a good swimmer. I knew I could stay with him, so I tried to jump on his feet and got smacked around by the guy just to his right as I misjudged where I was. In the process I took in a huge mouthfull of water and instead of spitting it out, I swallowed it. I ended up breathing hard and having to breathe every other stroke, something I wasn't used to at all. I was just gassed the whole time. I went to round the second buoy and got bumped and ran right into it. Stopped dead in my tracks. Literally.

I swim this fast without the damn wetsuit. I was pissed coming out of the water and nauseous from taking in so much lake water.
What would you do differently?:

Everything.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Took a little extra time here to catch my breath and think about puking to get rid of all the water I swallowed.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of that damn suit faster!
Bike
  • 41m 27s
  • 14 miles
  • 20.27 mile/hr
Comments:

This bike ride felt pretty good. I think I only got passed by 1 or 2 guys. I didn't feel as strong as I could have because that water kept sloshing around in my stomach and kept making me nauseous! I traded places with one guy a couple times. He was really hammering. I couldn't give as much as I wanted to because of my stomach.
What would you do differently?:

Hammer harder. Not swallow the lake on the swim.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

T2 was pretty good. I didn't have any issues at all. I wasn't sure at first which way to go out for the run, so I just followed another guy...who had a KILLER T2 time. I passed him on the bike and he caught my in T2 and I never saw him again.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at this point.
Run
  • 25m 25s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was tough for me. A lot of sloshing stomach. Too much crap in there.

Once again, I watched a ton of people in my age group pass me on the run. I was trying to push it, but my lunges just wouldn't take it. I don't know what the deal is. I am making improvement, but still the slowest runner out there.
What would you do differently?:

Run more, run more, run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Went for a mile or so jog with my buddy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Drinking the lake.

Event comments:

This was a good race and I would love to have another go at it next year. I think I can do much better. I also hit my watch at the start and it didn't start....really pissed me off.

My first sprint of last year was a lot like this. My problem was I drank my sports drink, accelerade on the bike instead of water. I thought I needed nutrition on a sprint back then. The whole run I contemplated throwing up or keeping it down. After looking back I should have thrown it up. Easy to say, tough to do. Looks like you got some practice with the wetsuit at least.
