So I finished my first 1/2 IM in 7/01 at Vineman in Cali! Very Cool!

Now, on to bigger and better things! I look at completing a full Ironman as one of the top achievements anyone could experience. The sense of accomplishment I felt crossing the line of the 1/2 can't come close to the sense I would imagine you feel hearing ... "you are an Ironman" after 13-16 hours (in my case...I think). I also lost my Mother to Cancer and have seen it more than I care to think about in friends and family in the last 2 years (not to mention my family history), so I plan on using my race in 2006 to raise money for Cancer Research.

So, as I start to think about training for next year, I am going to focus on my base starting now. Has anyone used or seen any kind of structured plans/theories on the base building phase for an Ironman?

Thanks,

JG

You have lots of options. You can use Going Long by Gordo Byrn, you can use Training Bible by Friel, or you can use a program on this site. i'll be putting together someting for the site by end of Octover. For now, work on your weaknesses, and work on building up your frequency in your weak sport, work on strength training, flexiiblity and core work.

Lastly, Congrats on your 1/2 IM and racing for Cancer is a very noble cause.

I too also finished my 1st 1/2IM, and am looking forward to more... but I have only so many hours in a week to devote to training for a full IM. Is it possible, does it make sense, do you get comparable benefits by stretching out a 20 week full IM training plan (like the one found on this website) into a 30-40 week training plan, so that my training hours per week fit into my life?

JG - congrats on finishing the 1/2! It is a great feeling of accomplishment, isn't it?!!!

You can certainly 'extend' your base period, but there is also a number of hours you should be able to do in order to complete the Ironman. How many hours can you train per week?

For my 1/2IM, I was doing between 7-9 hours per week, with an occassional longer week (10-11hrs) during the last month or so leading up to the 1/2IM. I might be able to find a few extra hours per week, but there is no way I can get up to 15-18 hours per week.

Hey J-McG,

Check out Don Fink's book, Be IronFit.  It has 3 IM plans, an advanced one, an intermediate one, and a Just Finish plan.  The Just Finish plan averages 7-8 hours/week, I beleive, and it peaks at 10 hours/week.  They are all 30 week plans.

Anyone have any experience with Fink's plans?  Any educated (or not ) opinions about the Just Finish plan?  If I am able to swing the Blue Devil Iron Distance next October, the Just Finish plan is what I'll have to pin my hopes on.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found the book on Amazon - I'll first see if I can find it at the library. In the meantime, there are a number of reviews - pro & con:

Like you, my goal for any iron distance tri would be in the "just finish" category!

Thanks for the book name etc. - I've just ordered a copy, sounds as if it could help. I've got a consuming jub, a family (3 young children) and very little spare time. I cycle and run into work to try & get solid training in but this is difficult.

JG, well done on the 1/2 IM! It is a great feeling, I only hope the full IM is twice as good.
