I did my first sprint tri last month. Ironically enough, my picture was in the paper and results were posted on line. Since then, alot of people have come up to me and say 'hey, I see you did that 'mini' triathlon. Congratulations, how far was it' After I tell people, some of them say 'Oh, that's not too bad, I'm sure I could do that'. Maybe that doesn't sound too bad, but most people say it as though it's a walk in the park. I mean, I trained for 8 months, 4 days a week, and was completely spent when finished. I just think most people don't realize how intense even a sprint can be.

Done with my rant. Anyone else experience this?

I think we've had threads like this before.

Your response should have been, "well, why don't you? I'd love to see you out there." Kill them with cold kindness.

Congrats again.

ya, I think when I tell people the distances they kinda shrug it off because the numbers really aren't that big. The vast majority of people also have no idea what it's like to do more than one activity in a row, at a race pace. Sure, lots of people can go for a 10 mile bike ride, or a 3 mile run and survive. Doing one after another though would probably keep a lot of those same people from going to work the next day...

I agree. My tri was .5 mi swim, 19mi bike 5 mi run. The one that gets me the most is 'half mile swim? That doesn't sound too far'. Yeah, try standing up after 15 to 25 minutes of swimming your but off, getting you equilibrium, putting on shoes, mounting you steed all in sequence. That's where triathletes seperate themselves from other athletes.

I know exactly how you feel. Anything under full Iron distance is treated as a "mini" in many people's eyes. What's interesting is that in our sport, a "sprint" distance falls between 1 hour-2 hours for the average person..if only people experienced going full-throttle for that duration do I think suspect they'll stop calling it "mini."

I've had the "that's not too bad" reply a few times, but no one has said they could do it. I don't really talk about my training at work (the only place I go outside of home or the gym), just for the simple fact it's so foreign to people. If you do talk about it, you have to be willing to take the good with the bad. People who say it's easy, or people who say you're stupid for working so hard at something that isn't essential (essential in their heads anyway) outnumber the people who think it's cool. When the average Joe hears about your race he is forced to think about how out of shape he is. Sounds like it anyway. Most of the guys I work with think that because I was an Army Ranger I can kill people with my thumbs. Guys twice my size get kinda edgy when I'm pissed off. My feeling is, the more mystique the better.

I am quite lucky then. All my coworkers admire the races I do no matter what the distance. Now, when they ask about training and they realize how much time I spend doing it, they think I'm crazy. Thats fine with me. Also, my boss' nickname for me is 'psycho'.

I run in to this all the time. For me it is the term "mini" that really gets to me. Makes it sound like a walk in the park.

As I have posted before, my standard response to people who say "I can do that" is: "Great, my next race is on ________. It's just a sprint (oly etc...) so that shouldn't be a problem for you. I will get you an entry form. I would love to have someone to race with."

Amazingly every single person I have said this to had some plans they couldn't get out of on race weekend.

I was guilty for the "that's not too bad" reply when last years 6 women at work were preparing for a Sprint.  A couple of them tried really hard to get me into it.  I was very tempted but due to a new home, I had absolutely no money for a bike (they even tried to borrow one for me but couldn't get the right size).

This year, as I had promised them, did my first race.  Although I had said the "not too bad" statement, I didn't underestimate the difficulties and trianed hard for it.  It actually helped me to push through as I kept telling myself it's "not too bad".  Made my first race with decend time.  While all the women who did last year were pregnant/good with one race a year, I'm getting ready for my next race, which will be this coming Sunday.

I've had that comment as well, numerous times, I try to let them also know the time spent doing the event along with distances. When was the last time they spent (depending on the race) 1.5 to 6 hours doing a continuous, strenuous workout against a clock? That seems to help with their perspective, a little anyway.

You know better and that is all that should matter. Like many have said, print them a registration form and tell em you are happy to have somebody else there doing it.

Heck, unless someone was in a swim team or an avid swimmer, most people don't even know an Olympic size pool is 50m long (as oppose to the dinky ones at your local Bally's). Therefore, I doubt they would understand the severity of a 0.5 mile swim. Fortunately, people to whom I have mentioned my endeavor were very supportive and polite. If someone gave me a demeaning "that's not too bad", then I would tell him/her to sign up for one and see for him/herself.

The distances don't sound too bad if all you're doing is going from A to B to C to D at whatever pace you feel like.  Most people forget about the "race" part when talking about the distances involved.

If you get a response like this and it bothers you, point out that the idea isn't to just cover the distances but to do it as fast as you can. An appropriate response to "I could do that" is "Yeah, but how fast? That's the question and there's only one way to get the answer."

people say stupid sh!t. So what? Does it undermine the effort you put in, or the sense of satisfaction you get? Do you race to dazzle other people?

It's like the thread the other day about how tris are getting "easier" becasue they are so much shorter, or people walk the run part... so what? Do your thing for you, and screw other people...

Most triathletes I know are not egomaniacs, in fact I have heard more than one downplay their race achievements by saying, "well I've worked hard for a long time, so it isn't as bad as it seems...."

I only do sprint tris and I get this all of the time. I just tell people if it so easy go ahead. One guy took me up on the challenge and he wasn't the mouth that he once was after the race. He is 9 years younger than me and thought he would kick my butt. I raced my race and beat him. He gave me the respect I deserved and the respect to the distance raced. He didn't think it was that easy afterwards.

While I can understand the feeling, you might want to examine why this is pissing you off......are you doing this to impress others, or yourself? If the former, you make yourself vulnerable to other people's opinions of your accomplishments...we care about the opinions of people who are close to us, but random folks commenting? Not worth it...

Try being told by your father that it is time to stop the triathlon nonsense and start raising your kids (never mind that 95% of my training is done as they sleep in the morning and get all my attention once I am home from work and on weekends aside from race day). People do say dumb stuff. Too bad there isnt a big 'Ignore' button like on some of the message boards out there.
