Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30. Coffee, cliff bar. Ready to rock.
Event warmup:

Got in the water and swam out to the first buoy and back.

Comments:

Wow. The wind was nuts! The small lake felt like a storm in the Bering Sea! Choppiest swim for me to date. Everything was going well until I rounded the turnaround buoy. The sun was in my eyes and my goggles started fogging heavily and I started sighting the wrong buoy. I probably added 150-200m to the swim. Very disappointed. I was basically guessing where the swim finish was and couldn't see it until I was almost on top of it.
What would you do differently?:

Trust my gut that something was not right. I should have stopped and pulled off my goggles to sight the correct buoy. I would have lost much less time. I also should have re-spit in my goggles right before the start because too much time had passed between the first spit (warmup) and the start gun.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Despite my sucko swim, I still managed to catch some of the slower people from the wave ahead of me and I got stuck in a bit of walking traffic on the narrow steps leading into transition. Not my best time for sure.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing short of push slow people out of my way - but that would be mean.

Comments:

With my disc cover on, the very strong winds were a challenge. On the east/west legs I was hit with nasty crosswinds and on the southbound leg I was charging into a pretty mean head wind. The northbound leg, however, had me going like a missile. Pretty happy with my pace considering the conditions.
What would you do differently?:

Sacrifice a goat to the wind gods before the race. I heard that works.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Unfortunately, the wind had blown my race hat and number belt away and I had to search the racks nearby to find them. Luckily, they weren't too far away and I was off to the run.
What would you do differently?:

At this point, I knew the triathlon gods were not on my side today so I was going to just try to pick up the pieces and salvage what I could of this race.
Run
  • 23m 28s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

The wind was really starting to blow now! We're talking steady 25-30mph! I gritted my teeth, pulled my hat down, and charged head-on into the obnoxious bitch that was the rest of this race. I was only able to pull of 7:45'/miles and that would have to be good enough.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think one goat would be enough. The wind gods were pissed.
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza and water. I walked around waiting for my wife to come down the finish chute and cheered her on.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The large volume of air that, for some reason, was unhappy with its current location over Lake Pflugerville and decided it needed to be in Canada as quickly as possible.

Event comments:

I came all the way from Las Vegas to get away from the perpetual violent winds. That worked out well. All of my times are based on my stopwatch and not the official chip times. The timing company in Pflugerville really Pfuc&ed up and was only able to post Pfinishing times. I was really looking Pforwards to this race but was disappointed in the end. Oh well, at least the bar was set low for my first sprint tri. They can't all be Pflawless. My next one is sure to be better.
