Pre-race routine:

Got a hotel room in Fort Lauderdale so I wouldn't have to go all the way back to Miami after packet pickup. It's a shame they had a 1 day 4 hour packet pickup window. Left for the race at 5:30... late considering I wanted to BE there at 5:45. Ate a banana and some coffee, almost to the exit for tradewinds d'oh! forgot bib numbers and cap at the hotel!! Zoom back...got to race plenty early but later than I wanted. Forgot to put a water bottle on the bike. Some guy was in the wrong row, he grumbled but moved and so I had a lot of space. Went to get my ankle thingy and be written on. Still won't come off BTW. Walked over to the start...got into the water to pee... :) did not warm up.
Event warmup:

None, but had an empty bladder!
Swim
  • 10m 9s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Easier than I thought, I could have gone faster. I should have started faster...trying to get by all the slow suffering people was a challenge as they drifted into me.
What would you do differently?:

I would have started at the front and swam the first 50 very fast.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

This was pretty fast I thought. Immediately I knew I had TOO MUCH STUFF. Never found my sunglasses (probably at hotel or in car) but it was kinda drizzly and overcast anyway so I would have been trying to ditch them anyway. I will never waste time on socks...I tossed those suckers aside first thing. :)
What would you do differently?:

Get to the race on time and have things better organized.
Bike
  • 36m 26s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Had no water, tough time shifting... didn't pass people like I should have. I just wanted to remain upright on the wet parts of the road and it was narrow. REALLY fast people were in the left lane passing for the first loop. Next time I will take NO PRISONERS.
What would you do differently?:

Have some balls. Bring some water.
Transition 2
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

Many bikes were on the rack that didn't belong there, that pissed me off so I shoved them all as far left as I could. Jerks. Then I started cleaning up the area... what the hell was I thinking? I put all my stuff in my bag and tossed it over the fence to my husband. GAWD. I need to lighten up on the clean-up urges. This was stupidly and painfully slow.
What would you do differently?:

Less Stuff, no fastidiousness. Learn to get off the bike without stopping. I'm lucky I didn't fall AGAIN.
Run
  • 37m 59s
  • 3 miles
  • 12m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

This is faster than I thought it would be since my running really is a weakness. I could have gone faster but I did a fair amount of walking. Learning to run light and with a higher cadence has saved me.
What would you do differently?:

I would run more and walk less. I would drink less water. I would relax more. There was a woman next to me on the last 200 feet... I passed her and then she came up next to me... we sprinted to the finish! FUN!!! I love a gamer in the field. I will send her a thank-you email. :)
Post race
Warm down:

I don't know how people can eat after these things. I had a banana in the car and some Zico Coconut water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of Organization - easy to fix. Lack of fitness - easy (relatively) to fix. Goal to "finish" = lack of confidence. Will naturally be more confident next time.

Event comments:

This is a perfect place for a first triathlon. Bike course was a little narrow and had oddly placed turns, a parking lot of puddles with room for maybe two bikes to pass for one...just weird. I heard there were wipe-outs.

Great job on your first triathlon!!!!!

It is fun to sprint to the finish, I came up behind a guy at my last tri and when he saw me he started to sprint, then I started to sprint and then I passed him at the finish line - fun stuff!
