Comments:

Quite possibly one of the more pathetic swim times posted. No, I wasn't dong the backstoke or sidedtroking the thing. Got killed by a bunch of green cap women (including the wife) on the wave before. Was hoping they would let me be a green cap but they wanted nothing to do with me. Don't worry, passed the wife on the bike! If you think this is bad you should have seen be a year ago! I have a pace that gets me through but need to work on speed. This is really my first year of triathlon so lots of room to improve.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Right now this is what it is. Will continue to work harder in practice on the swim and improve my speed.
Transition 1
  • 04m 14s
Comments:

Used the wetsuit strippers. Cool!!!!!
What would you do differently?:

No real problems or issues. Always need faster transition times
Bike
  • 2h 38m 31s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.20 mile/hr
Comments:

Got my new QRoo CD01 a few weeks ago and this was my fourth and longest ride. Overall the ride felt great. Maintained a good pace and felt good. The last 10-15 miles got a bit tiring. Was really feeling the bumps coming back into town. Legs were starting to cramp a little bit (more on this later). Noticed the temps were also increasing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Bilked hard but didn't feel like I was overdoing it.
Transition 2
  • 05m 9s
Comments:

Deliberately slow T2. Quads were cramped and I needed to stretch them out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 2h 14m 43s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

The slowest 13.1 time ever posted in my life. Granted, the first 13.1 in a 70.3 setting! I can comfortably run this distance around 1:45 as an isolated run, with a PR or 1:39. Not today!!!!! Quads were quivering like a bag of worms coming off the bike. Coming out of run out my quads were cramping bad and I could hardly move. Thought I was screwed. Luckily there was an aid station on the way out. Took water/perform and a banana and walked. Started my run slowly and started to fee ok. Initial plan was to do an 8 min mile but with the heat and my current status way ok with a 9. First half of the run doing around 8:30 to 9. Taking lots of water/perform/bananas. Walked the hill on the second loop. Everyone else was. On my way back when I saw the "The Most Interesting Man in the World" wanted to stop and drink dos XX. But, no beer to be found, better finish this thing! From the last turnaround near the lighthouse had been doing a walk-run combo platter because the legs were starting to spasm. Had a similar problem with last years Chicago Marathon due to the heat. My legs locked up so bad I could hardly move and the pain was incapacitating. So, listened to my body and slowed down. Worked well until the last mile. Was about 200 yards from the finish when both legs locked up in a such pain/spasm that I hit the ground. Worse pain in my life!!! Was flopping on the ground like a fish out of water screaming in pain. Three volunteers came to my aid, in addition to another runner who tried to stretch out one of my legs. I think the volunteers weren't sure to call a doctor or a priest (to perform an exorcism) due to my condition. Once I explained that I was cramping up, and it was my LAST LAP, they helped to my feet and I gimped the rest of the way in. Very frustrating because the moter was fine but the wheels have failed!
What would you do differently?:

Salt!!!!! Pickle juice?! Would drink my urine if it would make this go away!!!!!
Help me BT folks!!!!!

Not the first time this has happened in hot conditions. Really think it's a sodium issue.
Post race
Warm down:

Gimped across the finish line. Slowly walked up the hill and sat down. All of a sudden another wave of spasms to legs causing me to shout profanities and sort of flop around. Was aware of my surroundings and didn't want to freak out other people but was kind of hard. Things subsided and I asked a passerby to help me to my feet. Was ok at this point and gimped down to the medical tent to get some type of salt replacement but they didn't have anything to offer. Told me to go to the athlete tent where there was food. Went there and ate as many potato chips as I could handle, and more Perform and started to feel better.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I need sodium replacement during hot weather runs!

Once again, please offer any suggestions!!!!

Event comments:

It's my first 70.3 and I finished! Not really the way I intended but clearly I have a muscle spasm problem that needs to be addressed in extreme heat conditions-not the first time this has happened. Really wish I could personally thank the three volunteers who picked my ass up off the ground, and also the runner who tried to help me. Total class act!!!! Please read my report and offer any help you can based on your races to help me avoid this situation in the future!

You could try using Saltstick or Endurolyte capsules to help alleviate the cramping. I had/have similar issues and taking Endurolytes during training has really helped me.

Congrats on getting it done!  Awesome bike split.

It was hot out there.  I took 4 Salt Stick to keep the cramps at bay (3 on the bike, 1 on the run).  May want to give that a try in training.

Nice job!  Definitely try the salt caps.  Salt Stick brand has more sodium and potassium per pill than Endurolytes.  Try both and see what works.   had a different leg issue get me this year, but salt caps have definitely calmed the cramps/spasms.  Not the profanity laced tirades though.  I still get those.

Nice race report honey!  I'll find out where to buy some Salt Sticks and Endurolytes and you can keep both with you at Steelhead...maybe try them on your long runs this month (tho we both know it won't happen 'til another race).

Endurance sports induced Tourette's.  Such a terrible thing that happens to good people.

Thanks for the replies!  Will give both salt preparations a try.

Question:  Do you take them periodically during the race so that the cramps don't occur, or wait until you start to become slightly symptomatic.  Furthermore, once cramps do set in how long does it take to get relief?

Hey congrats!   nice report too.

Do not drink your urine.    Bear Grylls may give other advice, but I'd say it won't help, and you would just feel silly.   Seriously  Salt tabs   (I use endurlytes)  are to be used periodically to PREVENT crampzilla from coming around and destroying you.     Trying to tame the monster after it has appeared and done damage is like trying to kill Godzilla after it has already taken Tokyo

BTW  salt tabs etc are not the only culprit here.  I would look at both fluid intake as well as nutrition as cramp causes.    When its hot like it was   you need to take even more Gu or whatever in then you ordinarily would.

Anyways  just my 2 cents.

congrats again,  I think you did very well

Thanks for the advice!  Will definitely skip drinking the urine.  Actually thought I did pretty well with GUs and Perform but maybe would do better taking in more Perform vs. water to help with the lytes.  Ate lots of bananas.    Are there any guidelines on how much salt you should take in during a hot race to avoid the cramps?

I'm sure there are guidelines, but I don't know what they are.    I think its pretty individual.  Salt rates are different for people is my understanding.   The other thing is it really depends on how hot it is.     Also you may or may not tolerate the endurlytes or salt tabs.    it just depends.   so you have to experiment and see what seems to work for you.

For me, I try to make sure to not be shy on salty food leading up to a race.    Then I try to do MOST of my nutrition while on the bike.  Including endurlytes.  The idea being that I am preventing issues.  so I have 5 or 6 tabs on the bike on a hot day.  if its not going to be so hot I may only take a couple.     I think if you take too many that is problematic too, but have not had a bad experience from it.

All this being said,  cramps on the run come from a ton of reasons.   The biggest factor is going too hard on the bike.   I'm always guilty of this.   I try to keep it in mind and not go overboard on the bike.
