Anyone else get in while the $199 discount was going on? :-)  I haven't checked out the course much.  I just read a little about a bad uphill and a bad downhill?

I did Mooseman this year.  Its a good race but hard.  The bike had one nasty hill that you have to do twice.   I almost felt like I was going to puke when I got to the top (never felt like this before).  I think I tried to climb it too fast.  Just take your time getting to and up the hill then you can go a little faster after it.  I thought the run was harder than the bike but it could be that I didn't have enough electrolytes(major cramping).  Overall, its a great race but you probably won't find a more challenging HIM.

I have a question for anyone who has done the race before or is familiar with the area. What are lodging options? I see the official site talking about camping at the "Village" but was wondering if that is the only lodging option or are there hotels in the vicinity. I am all for camping but the night before the race....

Thanks

I did Mooseman this year.  There are plenty of lodging options.  Check Tilton or Meredith for hotels to stay in.

Happy climbing on the hills!

For those that have done this race, would you recommend it for a first HIM? I'm looking into 2012 planning, and this one seems ideal, schedule wise.  Thanks!

I registered for this as my first HIM.  I couldn't resist the savings too.  Any idea what the water temperatures will be that time of year?

This will be my first HIM as well. According to the info on the website, the water temperature should be around 62F/17C.

It can vary.....I did race 3-4x and water temps have varied from 55-62. It very much depends on spring and weather the week or two before the race.

My brother is an iron distance pro but he still signs up for this 70.3 every year because he says it's the only one that kicks his butt due to the hills.  His advice for me when I was asking him how to attack the monster climb you mentioned was to conserve my energy on the hill and attack the rest of the course.  Too many people try to attack the hill as hard as they can and it ends up burning out their legs for the run.

I've raced Moosman for several years, so here is my overview.

Swim - Plan on it being cold. Last 2 years I believe its been 60, but it can be as low as 52. I am kind of a wimp with cold water, but it always seems really cold.

The "monster" climb is very well deserving of its reputation. I highly suggest try to keep your HR as low as you can the whole climb. By the end of the climb, you will most likely be at threshold no matter what. You will see people hammering early and unless they are cycling stars, they will pay. (I found this out first hand)
Another suggestion is to get some extra gearing. I am a decent cyclist and I use a 12-26 cassette. Even with the 26, I was still looking for an extra gear.

I find the run really fair. One longer climb that you do twice, but in my opinion nothing crazy. The issue is the 56 miles you bike before.

As a reference point.... In 2011, I biked a 2:31 at Timberman and ran a low 1:40. Not a super tough course, but not flat by any means. At Mooseman in 2011, I biked a 2:46 and ran a low 1:40. I use power and averaged very close to the same at both courses, but was 15 minutes slower at Mooseman.

All this being said, I LOVE this race. The hills destroy the drafters and it keeps everything very honest.

Water is generally 62 degrees.  I believe this year it was a chilly 58.  Def. wetsuit material.

So what is everyone's hotel plans?  Best I could do was a hotel down by the Manchester Airport.  Where is everyone else staying?  I can't slum it too much, I have my wife and my youngest two children with me.

We're planning on trying the camp ground, seems convenient and good value. Probably not ideal with young children though. Anyone have experience with the camp ground/tips for a first-timer?

Wow we are less than 2 weeks away, I guess I have to start paying attention to this race. :-)  this sure crept up on the schedule.  Everyone excited, ready?  My swim and bike should be fine, but I haven't been running as much as I'd like.

What is everyone's taper looking like the next few days? I have 7000 yards swimming, 7 hrs on the bike, 30 miles run this week and then easy all they way next week....maybe 4000 yards swimming, 2 hrs bike, 5 miles run.

I have Mountains of Misery this Sunday, hoping to do the double metric.  I imagine I will take the rest of the week pretty easy, although I would like to do a long swim on Tuesday.  I will have to play it by ear.  Maybe spin & yoga classes on Mon/Wed, maybe nothing Fri and Sat.  Short run Thursday.

No real taper for me either...IMLOU in August and can't afford to give up the volume at this point of the year. I did line it up for next week to be a recovery week, so fortunately I will get a little respite going into next weekend.

August is a ways away bro but totally understand.  You racing IMLOU

Three months with a three week gradual taper. That only leaves about nine weeks of hard training.

Looks like the rain is going to be bad on Saturday but Sunday looks good(just lingering showers...mostly in the afternoon).
