Pre-race routine:

None really. Since this was my first duathlon I mostly mostly kept checking my gear, watching the other experienced athletes do their setups, and imagining the entire race mentaly.
Event warmup:

stretching, quick/light jogging.
Run
  • 00m
  • 2 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

started the run mid-pack but after mile 1, started to drop back. Mabye started off too fast/eager.

averaged 10min mile (personal best).
What would you do differently?:

slower pace at the start. don't rush/sprint from the line to keep up.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Need to practice the run->bike transition. clip tension needed to be adjusted (to tight to clip in/out).

What would you do differently?:

none.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 10 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

too busy/nervous to grab the drink bottle from the cage, very few opportunites to drink.
What would you do differently?:

gear changes for uphill sooner. scan further ahead into the trail to prepare speed/gear changes (ie, speed up just before uphills).
use the camelbak.
Transition 2
  • 00m
What would you do differently?:

unstrap shoes before getting to my rack position, possibly leave shoes clipped in and riding with feet on top of shoes (need to practice this).
Run
  • 00m
  • 2 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

right leg started to cramp almost immediately into this run. had to walk it off a couple of times.
cliff shots provided by volunteers at start of this run helped tremendously.
What would you do differently?:

wear the 'fuel belt' that I brought for the race (I didn't think I'd need it), pack a few cliff shots or equivalent.
Post race
Warm down:

light walking and stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

during the bike portion - gearing issues (not able to get into the right gear; mechanical issues). questionable rear brake; possibly needed new pads; prevented me from going downhill faster than I wanted to.

Event comments:

it was a great race. I accomplished my primary goal: finish the race safely and learning from it.
