Pre-race routine:

woke up to find my cold of 4 days had headed south right into my chest...cough cough, sneeze etc.

Toaster Strudel and Coke (no diet pepsi today) on way to race. 45 minutes to the site, easy drive.
Event warmup:

easy run with many pickups, tough breathing, did a bit longer warm up than usual to loosen up. probably 1/2 mile or more total. some stretching.

Saw Terri Servais and Diane Roanhaus..strong racers!
Run
  • 15m 21s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

felt pretty strong. 2 girls ahead of me at the start, caught one. passed many girls from the two previous waves. stopped for water. walked few seconds x1.
What would you do differently?:

not much, pushed as hard as I could.
Transition 1
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

had hesitation in T1, cant remember just what it was. odd, I remember hesitating...
What would you do differently?:

hmmm?? since can't remember what I hesitated about, don't know what to fix.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 10s
  • 22 miles
  • 20.57 mile/hr
Comments:

first 6 miles really sucked. trouble breathing, tired etc. kept thinking of my sig. line on BT (finish or get an ambulance ride, everything else is just an excuse) and realized my cold wouldn't qualify me for an ambulance ride, so sucked it up. Started biking better. mile 13 toes of right foot were all cramped up and being goofy...last few miles. Leap frogged with a guy for the last 8 miles or so. Passed by Terri Servais, who started probably 4 minutes behind me with about 3 miles to go. I kept up with her then, and came into T2 even with here.
What would you do differently?:

really need to do some true bike training. Bike is staying around low 20. somethings all season. (though, 2 seasons ago, was happy with 20, so have improved some.)
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

good T2, came in even with Terri Servais , got out ahead of her.
Run
  • 14m 38s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Did not stop to drink. kept thinking, "I will not lose first place by a few seconds!" (not knowing how fast others in my age group, that started in other waves were). improved lead on Terri, gained some on Diane. Those girls can bike!!!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

quick to get bike, and inside to change into dry clothes, wait around for results, then awards ceremony.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bad head cold, turned into chest cold. don't really think it hurt me more than just a little.

Event comments:

nice small race series...surprised it doesn't attract more racers. nice courses, cheap entry, well run. hmmmm. go figure!
