Subject: First Triathlon, What to wear?
So I will be doing my first triathlon September 17th and I was wondering what I could wear? I already ordered some tri shorts so thats covered. I was thinking about wearing a surfing rash guard for the swim, bike, and run just to keep everything to a minimum. Would wearing a rash guard cause any problems?

Rash guards are very slow in the water.  Very, very, very slow.  It probably will not breath very well on the bike and run either.  A tri top will work much better.

If allowed- you could go 'topless'.

if it's a wetsuit legal race and you've got a wetsuit- than any sleeveless compression top might work just fine.

Or- Pick up a basic tri top for cheap at places like Sierra Trading Post (sign up for their deal-flier for extra discounts).  They swim well.

also- get yourself a race belt.  An extra $6-$10 investment.  It's a strap that carries your race number for the run leg, that you just clip on at T2.

Depends on water temp/if its a wetsuit legal race.

If the waters warm enough I would go topless for the swim and pull on a compression t-shirt for the bike/run.  I did this for my last 2 (and my only 2 so far!) triathlons.  The only problem I had was the first time my arms were too tired in T1 to pull the shirt over my shoulder blades!  Luckily there was a kind volumteer in T1 who pulled it down for me.  That said I would do the same again.

Good luck with your first triathlon!

Get yourself a compression top or a tri top and wear that with your tri shorts for the whole race.

Pulling a shirt over a wet body sucks and tri tops are made to swim in anyway.

As already suggested, you can either go topless or opt for a tri-top, since you already have the shorts.  If you opt for a tri-top, it should fit tight, and you should plan on wearing it for the swim--you'll lose WAY too much time in T1 trying to wrestle on a tri-top when you're wet.  For shorter races I prefer a tri-suit (or if it's really hot out, just tri shorts), but it's just personal preference.

I'd only wear a tight shirt if you're planning to swim in it.  If you're not going to wear a top for the swim, then a looser tech shirt or regular t-shirt will be a lot easier to pull on in T1 than a tri top or compression shirt.

I did tri shorts and target C9 sleveless tech shirt. Tri tops and compression tops are for people in great shape. I'm heading there, but got a ways to go. I don't remember having any problem putting the shirt on wet.

You're kidding, right? I'm 5' 10" and 220 lbs and I wear tri tops for races and compression shirts for running.

Then again I really don't give much of a damn what people think, I'm in it to run my own race and not for a fashion show.

You're kidding, right?  I had the exact same shirt (it was a pretty snug fit), and it took me at least 30 seconds to get on in T1.  I recently bought a sugoi turbo tank, which is great, and my last T1 was 0:33.

Get a tri top and call it a day. They are meant to be extremely tight due to minimizing drag in the water, so make sure it's tight. A good idea is to go to a bike shop or a store where they carry triathlon gear and get someone that really knows their stuff to help you pick one out.
