Frankfurt City Triathlon
65F / 18C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 45m 3s
Overall Rank = 172/643
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 30/122
Pre-race routine:

Bike had to be checked in on Saturday afternoon

After the bike check in, it was raining heavily, all through the night
Luckily, the rain had stopped by 6am. There were some really dark clouds going through but no more rain!

Took a cab together with Christian and Martin, had an hour to prep
Were able to see the elite start (Timo Bracht started, he got 2nd place, he lost first place in the swim)
Swim
  • 31m 23s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

The total distance of this swim was very likely more than 1500m, the pros took around 21 min and I would have expected 5min less swim time also

Wetsuits were not allowed as water temp was 23.3C

After about 300m, I was locked into a group of 4 or 5 and I swam mostly behind one guy and had two folks on either side

That made getting into a rhytm difficult but pushed me, my arms felt much heavier than usual...
What would you do differently?:

Was a pretty good swim, the only explanation for the total time is longer distance than spec'd
Transition 1
  • 04m 6s
Comments:

Exiting the water you had to run up a small hill, grap your bag and change in a tent. There were not enough benches so I had to stand

Long way along the lake through the bike racks, that felt like half a KM..

What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Bike
  • 1h 18m 36s
  • 44.67 kms
  • 34.10 km/hr
Comments:

Overall a good ride, 10km splits were all within 33 to 35 kph avg
Based on the course profile, you could be 95% in the aerobars, which actually was unsual and hurt a bit

What would you do differently?:

I was hoping to go at least 34, better 35 kph avg, so I am okay with the time

Had I been used more to the aero position I should have broken the 35 avg
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

There were volunteers handing out the bags

The knot in my bad didn't open easily, that took me some time to get stuff out and back in and then finally my helmet in
What would you do differently?:

Tie the knot myself
Run
  • 48m 3s
  • 9.84 kms
  • 04m 53s  min/km
Comments:

THis was awesome, I could not believe that I was able to run under 5min pace! It didn't take too much effort to hang on to this pace
In the second half, I thought to hang on through KM 7 or 8 in order to potentially slow down a little and still make it under 50min
The 4th splits was a little slower but then I pulled myself together and picked up the pace again

Right knee felt a little weak but was not getting into a problem

Saw Mario twice towards the end of the loop

During the run, the sun was mostly out, but keeping cool was no problem
What would you do differently?:

Focus more on running, running actually can be fun:-)
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with Andreas who had started in a wave 15min earlier and had about the same total time

Got some Red Bull and cake and waited to see Martin, Alex and Christian come in

When I finally left the finishing zone I found my family, that was a great surprise

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, this was probably my best race ever and at true Olympic distances would have been around 2:30

I have already now bought new running soes (Asics GT 2160) because I think that with lighter shoes I will enjoy runnning much more

Event comments:

This is a great race overall

The only areas with improvement potential are the first transition area and the bike check out, in T1 there were not enough benches and I had to change while standing (which is of course how we normally do it anyway)
Bike checkout took 45 min, there was a huge line and no movement for about 20min
