Extreme Veteran 371 Montreal | Subject: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend I hope everybody is ready for this weekend! The forecast is for light rain, but NO wind. Just want to give a heads up for the swim. I mentioned to a few people that there is a little trick to help with sighting in the swim basin. I have never done this tri before, but I was told to look for a metal cable about 6 feet underwater. It helps to go in a straight line. I thought the cable was on the side of the basin, but its in the middle (between bouey and side). Anyway, you will see everybody going straight for the cable. Thought it might help. Can anybody confirm this? Good luck to everybody this weekend. |

Expert 1065 Montreal | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend Hi Patrick, We have had great weather leading up to it. The water should be pretty warm. I will be doing the Olympic (2nd wave) - the 11:00 am start. What will you be doing? I cannot confirm the cable story though I have paddled in the basin dozens of times. It is a pretty nice place. The water is only 3 meters deep and the basin about 100 meters wide. The course is out and back so I'm not sure how hard it will be to keep on course because you really cannot go that far off track. Hope to see you there. |

Pro 4040 | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend I've already competed in the race... oh wait, no I didn't ! That was me competing in the race in my head while I struggled to sleep last night. In any case, here is what I found using google: http://www.xtri.com/article.asp?id=797 He says it's the cable used to keep the buoys in place, which implies that it would be on the inside of the course. In any case, I'm sure if you ask around at the beginning of the race somebody will know. |

Extreme Veteran 371 Montreal | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend Well, Wookie and I met before, so it sort of simplifies things. It's easy, I'll be the one with tri shorts, a wetsuit, a bike and goggles! I don't know? Should we try to meet at the marking table around 10am? I'll be there around 9am myself if you want to meet earlier Patrick |

Pro 4040 | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend Naw, it's okay. I thought you'd never met. I'm doing the sprint with a 1:20 start, so you guys will be done or close to it by the time I start. If you watch my race, I'll be the guy in a blue speedo (bicycle short length), blue and grey cycling shirt, blue helmet riding a bright yellow Opus (with yellow tires!). How's that for colour co-ordination? I hope it doesn't rain too much, this will be the second tri my wife attends, and if it rains, the second tri she attends in the rain. I don't care, but it sucks for her. |

Expert 1065 Montreal | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend I will be in Team Javelin gear so should be fairly easy to spot - blackand orange. And I have put on a few pounds recently so a little sausage like I plan on arriving onsite around 7 AM or so set up, get in a quick dip to test out the water. Lemme see sprint goes at 1:30 - I might be finished by the time Opus gets out of the water. |

Extreme Veteran 371 Montreal | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend My wave starts at 11h30, so I should finish between 2 and 2h30. My first Oly, I think I will be doing about 2h50. Its not fast, but its way faster than I was 8 months ago! |

Expert 640 Montreal | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend Opus, I too will be starting my first race at 1:20, I am the fat guy with a mustache in the black tri shorts. The latest weather forcast that I heard this morning does not sound to nice. 30 km/h winds and rain with a high of 17. That said, I don't have a problem with the swim leg, I'm going to get wet anyway. But now it's a different race on the bike and run. I never try to go out in the rain to train. I have been cought in the rain while out, but it had been very warm and the rain was a good thing. What are you planning to wear on the bike and during the run to stay warm. I am not equipped and might have to pick something up today. |

Extreme Veteran 371 Montreal | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend Wow! That wind is going to be a killer on the bike! The good thing is that it's supposed to be from the North East, which means it will be in our back on the long straight stretch! We're gonna be flying! Its going to be much tougher on the other side of the circuit, but at least there are a few more obstacles to block it. Soloryder, I will bring a sleeveless jacket (shell) and I will go and buy arm warmers today in case i need them. MEC (http://www.mec.ca) has some for 22CAD. I just checked the MEC website and the sleeveless cycling vest is currently on sale for 29$ instead of 39. Good luck tomorrow Patrick |

I'm the guy in the blue bike shorts-length speedo, very short (quarter inch) blond hair and bald on top. Oh yeah, Austin Powers mat of dark chest hair. Hey, I sound kinda gross! A shade under 6ft, 185 lbs. If somebody explains how to attach a picture, I can do so (I know, it's pathetic that I don't know how, but I've never done it). For the everything but the swim, I'm just wearing my bike shirt. I don't have a tri top and I have a windbreaker for the bike but I'm not using it because I don't want to overheat. My only other tri was in the rain, but it was significantly warmer. I'm hoping the cool weather is going to be a blessing. |

We had to take a picture of the sandwich, it was huge! I'll be there this afternoon, probably around 4, but I'm not hanging around for the meeting at 6. I was thinking about these metal rails in the basin. They would be the rails to attach the buoys for rowing competitions. So, my guess is that if you divide the basin into 4 equal parts, and swim along one of those imaginary lines, you should find a rail to swim along. Does this make sense? |

Expert 640 Montreal | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend I think the basin has 8 racing lanes and one commuter lane for boats to get to and from the race start at the far end of the basin. From the diagram on the website, we start in lane 2 or 3 , swim to the turn around, take a 90 deg left across to lane 6 or 7 and another 90 deg left head back to the swim exit. The rails or cables, I would assume are the one that hold the lane markers in place. There might be some in the center of the lanes as well. I have heard that seaweed was an issue in the past. This might reduce the chance of seeing the cables.

Expert 640 Montreal | Subject: RE: Montreal Esprit tri, no luck spotting fellow BTer's O.K. Rob, do you know how many people fit the discription that you gave me. At the packet pick-up, I was looking for you , no luck. During the swim start, I looked, one problem, everybody had on yellow caps, so it tried to look for the blue jammers. No luck. Finally you noticed me on the run. Forgive me, but thinking back on the race, I think in my haste as you we blowing by me I may have called you Rich instead of Rob. I think I was concentrating too much on the task at hand. I looked for you also after the race as ( yellow Opus) I walked around in the rain gathering up my stuff, kid and wife, but you we probably half way down the 20 by then. Mike |

Mike What, my picture didn't help? Patrick (p4406) spotted me on Friday. It's funny having somebody call out your name, but no recognizing the face of the person. Yeah, I looked for you at the start of the race, but now I know why I didn't see you, you were up around the front with the people who can actually swim! What was your time, 12:18? Say hello to Mr. 16:00. And, I'll tell ya, I will never go that long without swimming before a race ever again. I got out of the water dizzy and feeling sick. Funny thing is, I was looking for a fat guy, and you have misled everybody here, you ain't fat! I actually looked at you on the run because I saw the 43 on your calf, so I thought, that might be you. After the race I got my stuff, my food and then I took off, as I was soaked from the torrential downpour that started just after I finished and my wife, bless her, got her jeans soaked and was in no mood to hang around. It was a fun race, I loved the 40 kph downwind leg of the bike course! This is a triathlon course built to set personal records. |

Expert 640 Montreal | Subject: RE: Heads up for Montreal Esprit tri this weekend Rob. You are too kind. Just this morning before getting dressed for work my daughter runs into the room, give me a big hug, then tapps my belly and said " you better get back on the bike soon, you need to get this fat belly down". Talk about killing the high I was still on from finishing the race Sat. I know it has been 40 hrs already , I should get over it and move on. By the time we were loading up the car we too we drenched rats. We all stripped down to our underwear before getting in the car. Good thing we did'nt get stopped by the police on the way home. I would have had a lot of explaining to do. |
