Pre-race routine:

Felt like garbage in the morning after wife's bday party the day/night before. Went to the bathroom about 5 times and had 2 cups of coffee. Didn't feel like eating anything.
Event warmup:

We got there late because of traffic and I needed to use the portobody. From there I had no time to warm up and me and my wife just pushed are way through the crowd at the start as far as we could for a minute or two and then boom the gun went off and we started running....had to zig zag around a bunch of people at the start

Comments:

We were late and had no warmup. Started towards the back and couldn't start really running for a minute or so. Then the adrenaline kicked in and I didn't care about anything else. I just went out at what I thought I could hold and held on.

Wasn't sure how I'd feel after eating and drinking a lot at Shel's birthday party yesterday but I had a pretty good run under relatively warm and humid conditions for me. I don't go into this race with high expectations and try to treat as a fun race but of course just gave it what I had.

Faded a bit once I started getting hot and hit a rough patch in the middle and my shoe came untied around mile 8 so stopped to tie it as quick as I could and that interrupted my rhythm a little. Even though I was fading a little I was still passing a lot of people and then I passed a few people that I know and they have been faster than me last year and that sort of fed my confidence. As I went by them my confidence started building and as I went over the last hill I started picking it up again. Then I was in a zone and when I realized I had a 1/2 mile left I just went. It was a pretty good run. I can tell by my HR that I was pushing it and the heat was a factor.

Wore my HR monitor to get an idea of what I can hold so this gives me a good benchmark to reference.

Post race
Warm down:

Drank a beer from the beer tent and was instantly buzzing since I hadn't eaten anything.

Event comments:

This race is pretty sweet. It's the championships so you get a lot of legit runners there and it's pretty cool overall right in downtown New Haven. It was more humid this year and the times were a little slower. I'm doing it again every year if I can.
