Less than a week away.

It will be my first triathlon. I needed to learn to swim to do this. 10 weeks ago I could not swim a stroke, now I am looking at a triathlon in open water.

Not sure what brought this wanting to try a tri itch on, but I am about to scratch it.

I am ready.

Semi Confident.

Well trained.

Going to wear a wetsuit. Have been practicing with one. The only thing I have not really done is practice the crowds. To this I will be holding back a bit when my wave starts. I am old so my wave will be last or second to last to enter the water.

Going to wear socks. Practiced that too.

Not going to wear a top in the swim though. Going to towel off and put one one in transition 1. I am thinking it will be way too cool to ride race speed in wet clothes.

Is this a bad idea?

Will there be a place in the water for warm-ups? I have learned to acclimate first and get a few minutes under the belt, so to speak, before starting the REAL swim.

I will put my transition in a place where I can remember where it is. Is this an issue? Loosing your place?

There is a warm-up area to the left of the start.

It is a beach start, I suggest swimming to one side of the pack (opposite your breathing side, you can sight on other swimmers that way)

Have you practiced putting a dry shirt on while wet, in a hurry?

Transition is by Hobie Hill - if its at the waterside lot this is a long, narrow transition, so setting up near the bike out will save you a little effort running with your wheels; if its above the shelter, its a big rectangle, but also at the top of a hill and stairs.

Once transition is filled look for something bright or easy to spot on the end of your rack, or bring something.  I use a bright-striped mat or towel; sidewalk chalk is a good alternative, put a big arrow on the ground pointing to your spot.

And don't forget to have fun!

This is going to be a wave start with waves of less than 100 people. With nice big 5 minute waits in between so you will not experience the crowds and rough time you always hear about in triathlon.

Wave-A (8:0oam) Elite M/F; Men 34 & Under
Wave-B (8:05am) Men 19 & Under; Men 35-44
Wave-C (8:10am) Men 45-54; All Relays
Wave-D (8:15am) Women 30-34; Clydesdale
Wave-E (8:20am) Women 29 & Under)
Wave-F (8:25am) Men 55-59; Women 35-44
Wave-G (8:30am) Men 60+; Women 45+; Athena

Nothing wrong with holding back and easing into your swimming pace. There will be plenty of boats and help out in the water. You are very safe out there in Cherry Creek.

Toweling off and putting on a shirt in T1 will take some time, and if you are even a little wet it will be a pain. Any decent tech type top will dry off quickly once you get on the bike. The forecast is looking in the 70s so I don't think it will be too cold at all.

Almost everyone will be doing a warm up swim. They always have a place to do that.

Transitions in this size race are not too crazy. Some people will still bring streamers and balloons, but I usually take a minute walk through the transition as if i am coming in off the swim and bike and walk to my spot. Sort of like finding someones house for the first time, you don't need the directions after you've been there a few times.

I'll be there racing too. If you'd like a little setup & warmup buddy shoot me a message, I've done a handful and am pretty confident with the whole routine.
