Pre-race routine:

Note: This was my first ever Triathlon. Arrive at 6:30. Bring gear to transition, then head to chip pickup and body marking. Just tried to stay calm and drink some water.
Event warmup:

Pretty cold and wet morning. Stayed in sweats as long as possible before stripping down and heading to swim start. Did some stretching and got in the water to do a little swimming about 10 minutes before start. Stayed in the water until event start, water was 75 degrees vs air temp of 53 :)
Swim
  • 18m 51s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty good swim. Was a bit left/outside of course half way up the first leg. I felt good and calm, but 3/4 through I just wanted to swim to be over, mostly due to not being able to see well. Had difficulty seeing/sighting, combination of the weather (overcast and drizzle), smoke colored goggles, goggles fogging, and fog coming off the water. Oh and no glasses. I couldn't see more than 20 yards at water level. started to pick out the tree line as a target.
What would you do differently?:

Need to solve the seeing/sighting issue. Start on the right instead of the left to see people as I breath.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

My highest heart rate of the whole race was coming into T1 after running the 300 yards up the hill coming out of the water. Tried to calm down a bit and get my socks and shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Should practice transitions at some point. :)
Bike
  • 59m 31s
  • 14.37 miles
  • 14.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I was just trying to get my heart rate under control during the steady climb from mile 1 to 4. Was steady through the rolling sections. I hit my goal of under 1 hour for the bike leg, which was nice.

Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Swap to running shoes.
Run
  • 41m 26s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, it wasn't pretty. Jogged the down hill sections and had to take some walk breaks on the up hill. Just a bit tired by the end. Looking back at my training this was about 3 minutes slower than I would expect. Oh I was clipped by 6 seconds as the end by someone who ran the 5k 10 minutes faster (can you say MOTIVATION).
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Stretch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More base miles. Just do it.

Nice job Steve.  Your T times are pretty good...my T1 is always too long.
