Pre-race routine:

Since this was my first event I only knew what to expect from reading about it. Overall I think it went extremely well and I'm happy with the result!

Got to bed before 10pm, woke up at 5am. Had a muscle milk and some water w/ regular vitaman pak. Tried to go #2, no joy. Biggest worry was having to go on the course (wasn't a problem) but I made sure to hit the can a couple of times before the start.

Event warmup:

First to the rack so took the front spot, marked rack with a Jazz Fest bandana. Decided to just leave bike shoes out (no towel), wore gloves for start, helmet on bike.

Jogged in place while chatting with the guys at my rack, then stretched while listening to pre-race instructions. No running/riding beforehand. Forgot to take Gatoraid gel before start.

Ended up sprinting to the start after last portacan trip!

Do differently:
1) Early morning poop, can you change your schedule?
2) Put all my valuables in backpack with lock, next time leave wallet in car.

NOTE: Times are from posted sheet, mine varied for splits but overall was right on.

Comments:

Garmin - 16:10.50/1.8 miles. Pretty good run, I tried to hold back and even though I wasn't watching the Garmin I used the HR alarm to throttle back. I was trying to just get to the bike and paced with a 70 yo. He was close at the finish, too (1:11).
What would you do differently?:

Just need more endurance and speed work. Did better than expected with an 8.4 pace versus 10'ish for training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Garmin - 3:04 for T1.

Need to work with bike shoes, running with them suck and I couldn't find the pedals to clip in!

What would you do differently?:

Run shoe lace got knotted, cost me 30 secs.

Bike
  • 31m 10s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Garmin - 30.16.27/9.98 miles/19.8 mph

Felt good on the bike, I had problems out of T1 getting into the clips, passed by a girl right out of the chute. Once I got going not too many guys pass except pointy heads, otherwise I was able to pass a number of people (mainly clydesdales and athenas on 1st loop).
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I could have got more on the bike, but I'm happy with 19+ (expected 18 mph) and run off the bike sucked, so I might have overdone it.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Garmin - 1.31.58

Might have to look into tri shoes, watched the girl next to me dismount coming in and she smoked me from the stop line to the rack.
Run

Comments:

Garmin - 17:48.22/1.87 miles

Need to work on running off the bike, I lost my breath and that was scary! Backed off and was able to finish, had to push myself to the turnaround. After getting encouraged by a 13 yo boy and then passed by 11 yo Kaytlynn Welsch, I pushed harder to the finish, made a good push to the finish line!

Thanks Doug and Lisa for coming out to cheer me on!
Post race
Warm down:

Some stretching, take fluids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More aerobic capacity required.

Event comments:

Good event, was run well and no problems. Not sure where they rank but compared to OnUrLeft they have some ground to make up. Great first race and met some nice people and had a good time!
