Longboat Key, Florida
United States

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 14m 25s
Overall Rank = 213/300
Age Group = 40 - 49 C
Age Group Rank = 9/11
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:20 and had a bagel and banana before leaving the house. Arrived, checked in and setup fairly quickly and easily. Waited a bit, then wandered down to the start beach. Kept on the warmup jacket as long as possible.
Event warmup:

Static and dynamic stretches. stayed out of the water, as I didn't want to freeze my butt off. This Florida boy was cold.
Swim
  • 16m 51s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went in towards the end of the wave, trying to stay out of the fray. Got into a bit of a groove and I was OK. Started struggling half way through and started doing some side strokes to ease the breathing. I have to get better on the breathing. All in all, I was happy with the whole swim.
What would you do differently?:

Continue working on swim form and technique, emphasis on breathing.
Transition 1
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

The start was less then what I would like, but not bad for my second race. Got into the groove early and kept between 20 and 21. Dismount went well.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on mounts during the winter.
Bike
  • 57m 49s
  • 20 miles
  • 20.76 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was well managed and the volunteers did a great good. There was some obvious drafting, but it looks like a bunch of penalties were handed out.
What would you do differently?:

More practice on mounts and dismounts.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Run
  • 55m 15s
  • 5 miles
  • 11m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

And so the wheels fall off. I know I'm not fast at any of these, but the run just killed me. I really need to get better on the run. I will work on this over the winter.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on the running, gotta get better.
Post race
Event comments:

This is an enjoyable venue. I will be back. Well managed, lots of volunteers and a nice course. While I am not a fan of the beach run, it was all nicely done.

Nice job today!  Glad to hear you are talking about next year already.  It does get better as your fitness base builds.  It just takes time, be patient and you'll see the difference next season.  Hopefully we'll cross paths in 2012.

Thanks, I have a 1/2 Mary in November to work towards, then it is a whole lot of training. And thanks for the encouragement, it'll take me a while to get there, but I have seen improvement already.

See you next year.

Good job.  I found it takes a few (or more) races to balance the bike and run pacing.
