Comments:

Set out on an 8:50 pace thinking I could hold that for the first half and maybe go down to 8:45 on the way back. I felt really good on the way out and took my gel at about mile 5 even though my stomach wanted nothing to do with it. Somewhere between mile 7 and 8 it started to become an effort to maintain pace and found it slipping when I wasn't keeping an eye on it. Then at mile 10 it became an all out battle to hold pace. At mile 11 I started losing that battle and pace dropped. At mile 12 I thought there was no way I was going to finish the race running and was wondering if I would even finish at all. I sucked it up and gritted out the last mile coming in to the finish line to the Rocky theme (how cliche). I threw a few punches at the air and put on a forced smile and stumbled across the finish knowing I left everything I had that day on the course.
What would you do differently?:

More long training runs and some over distance.
Post race
Warm down:

Spent a few minutes afraid I was going to die and then a few more afraid I wasn't. I grabbed some water and a chocolate milk then did a little stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm guessing lack of distance training.
