2005 Wilmington YMCA Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

View Member's Race Log
Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina
United States
Set-Up, Inc.
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 37m 23s
Overall Rank = 402/
Age Group = Master Novice M
Age Group Rank = 13/29
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45, ate light, bannana, etc. Drank 40 oz power aid. Set up trans area and waited 2 hours for the shuttle and the start. God I hate that part. I burn more energy at the wait then I do during the race.
Event warmup:

Walking and light stretching.
Swim
  • 26m 17s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Salt water is not good to drink. Our wave was to be the last, but they added another for the late people. I had some very agressive people passing me. I did manage to predict the current for the second bouy and was able to cut the corner tighter then anyone in my wave. That helped some..
What would you do differently?:

I need to get behind someone and draft. More open water swimming will help.
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

A long run in from the swim. It took longer to get a rock and gum off my foot before the bike. I had a bottle and towel to clean my feet, but it still took to long.
What would you do differently?:

No socks.
Bike
  • 39m 51s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.72 mile/hr
Comments:

Very tight course. Started out easy and had a difficult time picking up the pace. I did finish with my highest avg. speed ever. I know it seems slow but for me it is a great time.
What would you do differently?:

Push it harder on the bike. It would look so cool to have a speed avg. above 19. I had too much leg left for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

No problems here. A little bit slow getting my shoes tied. T2 was my fastest T2 time yet, I am learning each race!
What would you do differently?:

Need to try speed laces.
Run
  • 27m 15s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

A good run for me. I train at a 9 min mile so this was just right. The ending was unique dodging someone hurling in front of me.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace a little bit more in the begining. My last mile was prob. in the low 8's high 7 range. I hate ending with the feeling that I could have pushed it more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking arround and talking to fellow BT members. Bad post race food. Whats up with this crap they had.. Warm citro max and water. Come on at least buy some ice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Taking it lightly at the start of the run and bike. I left some on the table. The last month was a rough one for training so I did feel the lack of speed work, all I was able to do was base training. All in all it still was my best tri yet.

Event comments:

I will do this one again next year to see how I do and compare. It will be a good one to gauge my improvement or lack there of.

Performance:
2nd to last wave in the water. Got my googles kicked off and a fat lip by somebody passing me. Drank a ton of salt water. Breast stroked to get my act back together. It was a tough swim to the first mark, after that I settled down and was able to sight well.

Nice race!!!

Definitely need to make a better meet for the BTer's there were way too many of us not to have linked up and made a splash out there.

Next year...

Good for you--very nice race. I knew there were other BT folks there, but didn't see any of them. Next time, definitely!

Hey Steve.
I was good seeing you at the end there and realizing you were racked right next to me.
Sounds like you did pretty well for your limited training time, especially with cranking out some 7 minute miles.
Sounds like there were a lot of us there and we didn't even realize it, next year we definately need to get together sometime either before or after the race.
