Woke up at 4:30 did get some sleep but I was up and ready to go!!! I woke and had my cliff bar, water and then just read my magazine!! Took off for the race about 5:45. Parked at a hotel and took a shuttle to the race!!
Event warmup:

Tried to find away in the dome, finally got in and talked with this other lady that was there and by herself. Used the bathroom and just sat and stretched. Then it was time to line up and get ready to go!!

Comments:

This course was great along with the people!! I had such a good time!!
I did struggle at mile 20 so now I know!! I ran great 1 through 19 and then hit the wall!! I was on for a 4:50 marathon time, but could not get going on those last 6 miles!! But once I saw the finish I decided that I need to pick up and run!!
What would you do differently?:

Train on more hills! Will do that for next year!!
Post race
Warm down:

I went and had water and yogurt thing and stretched and found some grass to rest on for awhile. Then got on the buss back to the hotel and took off! Next year I might stay over for another day!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills, I felt great but those hills.................

Event comments:

Thanks to all those that watched and cheered people on!! and Thanks to those volunteers they did a wonderful job!! THANK YOU

Hey great job! I took the family down to watch my nephew run yesterday. Started the day at mile 7 'cause my wife running partner was working the Lifetime water stop, then drove over to mile 24 where my Dad was working the first aid station. I spent the afternoon talking myself into running next year for the 25th annniv. I'm always impressed with the number of people that come out to watch. I can hardlywait to see it from the other side.

Again, great job, see you next year!

Jay

ps, there are a bunch of us running in Autumn Woods 10K next weekend, that should seem like a short walk in the park for you if your interested.

My kids (ages 6 & 3) had so much fun making signs for my nephew. I made a casual mention to my wife that I might give it a try next year for the 25th anniv. So my girls go home and start making signs for Daddy.

So I guess I'll be running next year too. I am really excited about it, though can I go from a 10K to a marathon in one year? Any training advice?

Good Luck,
Jay

That sounds great Jay

I am no pro, but I know you can do it but do it gradually!!! It was also interesting fitting tri training in with marathon training. But I do know that just make sure you get your long runs in!!!!

Start increasing your distance and build a base and you will do great!!! It sounds like it will be fun!!!

We will have to get a BT group meeting???

Congratulations. As it relates to your hitting the wall at mile 20, don't forget that there is a pretty much constant hill from mile 20 to 23, so that might have been part of your pain. You sure had a beautiful day to run. I took my daughters down to watch my mother run the 10-mile. We had to keep the "GO GRANDMA!" cheers down a bit to not discourage the other runners....

I've been running sor the first time this summer after many years of smoking. I can now comfortably handle a 10K and keep my times under 10 min miles. My 5K averages around 27 minutes. I've started putting in longer runs on weekends, but define longer runs. For me it's between 6 and 8 miles, more like 6 recently. I'm just curious what I need to work up to to finish this, get my medal and t-shirt, and not drop over dead.

A side note, keep hearing that you guys will be getting snow today, anything yet?

Good Luck,
Jay

Hey Jay

So far now snow, but just north of Fargo they have 16 inches!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it stays north....

Jay the plan that helped me out was Hal Higdons plan and I just followed that!! My opinion is trying to increase your long run(base) as to 8 to 10 (10percent at a time) and then start with the training.. It is so much easier to have a base.. I did a couple halfs this summer so I kept up my running!!! I hope this helps!!http://www.halhigdon.com/#marathon

As a 5 time - mid-pack to back-pack marathoner, I can tell you that YES-- You can go from a 10k to a full marathon in a year. I went from Couch Potato (no race experience at all) to finishing Grandma's Marathon in less than 7 months -- So it CAN be done!

Training advice -- DON"T MISS THE LONG RUNS!!! THEY ARE CRITICAL. Also, work hard on managing your pace. It's very easy to go out fast and then find that lovely WALL!

Meantime -- I'm training for Triathlon #1 next month -- a reverse order short sprint. With plans to return to Minnesota for the Lifetime Tri next Summer --

Brett

Good luck on the Marathon!
