![]() Swim
Comments: The swim was horrid this time! Last time the pace was good, this time it was a barrage of arms, legs and heads. I should have stayed farther back in order to get a better position, but I wanted to beat my time. I did, but I got pounded in the head at least 5 or 6 times. This threw my pace way off. I was expecting an under-9-minute swim. But instead it was 9:35 out of the water, and 10:42 by the time I got to transition. I need to rethink my swim strategy. What would you do differently?: I'd like to say I'd stay further back, but in the swim that woudl only hurt my time. The swim is measured from the gunshot, not the start line since we're in the water. I'm gonna rethink this one. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: This transition would have been better had I taken my MP3 player off the bike before the race. They told us "no headphones" about 10 minutes before the race so I didn't have time to take the player off before we started. If I had, I probably would have saved myself at least 15 seconds in this transition What would you do differently?: I was 7 of 9 (age group) and 51 of 84 (overall) in this transition. I would definitely make sure everything is in line so I don't waste time. Time-for-time, I lost about 23 seconds here, the exact time I gained in my swim, over my previous swim time. ![]() Bike
Comments: Overall I was happy with this bike portion. Even with the extra 1.43 miles, I beat my previous time by 10 seconds. At the 11 mile mark, I was 5 minutes, 6 seconds ahead of my previous 11-mile time. The racing slicks definitely helped here, along with increased leg strength. What would you do differently?: Need a real road bike, but I can't afford it just yet. I'm sure that'll help bigtime in getting my time down to under 45 minutes! ![]() Transition 2
Comments: This was a great transition, everything fell into place perfectly. I ran in, racked the bike, checked my shoes, and I was off! In this transition I was 2nd in my age group and 10th overall. I don't think I could have made this one any better! What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Run
Comments: As you can tell, the run is my strength. In the run I was in the upper 43% of all the participants, while in the swim, 67% came in before me, and in the bike 86% beat me. Running is my first love though, I've been a runner for 17 out of my 31 years on this planet so it's definitely where I find solace in such a grueling event. What would you do differently?: I would try to keep my pace up better. Last time I was at 8:50 per mile. This race found me 10 seconds per mile behind that pace. Had I kept up the previous pace I would have come in even before my previous overall time, even with the 1.43 extra bike miles! But I'm still happy with my run performance. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Plenty of water, walking around, stretching, breathing exercises, etc. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think the swim took alot out of me, but other than that, I think my bike limited my time. With a better bike I know I can do a lot better than I did this time. Event comments: I'm happy with this one. If you analyze the last sprint (400m, 11mi, 5K) my times were 11:05s, 1:28T-1, 48:24b, 1:01T-2, 27:34r...1:29:34. If you factor out the distances from this one (400m, 12.43mi, 5K) to the previous distances, my times would have been 10:42s, 1:51T-1, 43:18b, 0:43T-2, 28:08r. I swam 23 seconds faster this time. I lost 23 seconds from swim to bike, I biked 11 miles 5 minutes and 6 seconds faster, transitioned from bike to run 18 seconds faster, but only lost 34 seconds in the run. Mile for mile, I gained 4 minutes and 50 seconds in this race, and had it been the same distance as my previous race I'd have finished in 1:24:24. I'd say that's a hell of an improvement. Ate a banana, drank a RedBull, stretched, visualized the race, etc.
Went down to the beach, got in the water (beautiful temp!) and waded a bit to get used to it.
