Total Time = 1h 32m 16s
Overall Rank = 91/115
Age Group = Clydesdales
Age Group Rank = 8/10
Pre-race routine:

Clif Bar,Gatorade, set up transition. The race director made an announcement that he was sorry they took the swim out and changed the tri to a duathlon, but if anyone had any doubts, to go and check out the pier where the swim exit was supposed to be. There were dead fish floating all around the pier...at this moment, I was glad to NOT be going into that water!
Event warmup:

None
Run
  • 20m 55s
  • 2 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty good run for me. Because running is my weakest area, I knew that this would be a mental game for me as I watched almost everyone in the pack take off ahead of me, and stay ahead of me. But it was stil a fast pace for me
What would you do differently?:

Get faster!
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Estimated T1 time...they didn't chip time us and only gave total times, but I knew my first run split was 21:00, and my bike time was 46 minutes from my computer, so I am guessing on 2 minutes transitions...otherwise my second run would split be in the 9s, and I know that didn't happen!
Bike
  • 46m 25s
  • 14.12 miles
  • 18.25 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where the race got really fun. This was my first race on Sugar, and man is she a blast to ride. For just a few minutes, I felt like Aaron. I passed probably 20 people on the bike course, which is incredible for me. This was my fastest bike split of the season, and it was really fun. I still need to build my engine to get into the 20 mph range, but this was a really good ride for me.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, other than keep building the bike engine.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

Again, estimated
Run
  • 20m 56s
  • 2 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

This is the point at which I felt like I was going to crash....after going hard on the bike, it was a real challenge to keep pushing, but I ran as hard as I could and had a good finish
Post race
Warm down:

Some pretzels, a bottle of water, and walked back to transition

Event comments:

I really wish I would have known they were not timing us, because it is POSSIBLE that I ran a faster second run split than the first...it all depends on my actual transition time, but because I did not do the splits on my stopwatch, I'll never know. I knew we weren't being chip timed (obviously since I had no chip) but I thought they were manually timing our splits. I am certain of my first run time, and my bike time, so I was able to estimate the rest. Either way, this was my fastest bike split yet, and both runs were unquestionably somewhere in the 10s...so I'll take it with a smile as I enter the offseason.

Great job, the 2nd run being that close to the first is just awesome.

Great job Brandt! Nice to see the race organizers didn't let you into that water, I'm envisioning a bunch of triathletes emerging from the water with patches of skin missing and weird mutuations...but it's even NICER to see your success on the bike and in pushing yourself for the second run!

Thanks, everyone!  It was a fun first season, and to see the improvement was really neat.  Now that I have hired a coach and nutritionist, I'm hoping the sky is the limit for next year.

I appreciate everyone's encouragement.  Now it is time to get those run miles in, because I have a couple half marys on my schedule this winter.
