Swim
Comments: The swim was my best part of the day. I was 6th of the 15 in my age group. What would you do differently?: I felt it went well. I would get out of the water to the timer quicker. The timer was about 150 feet from the lake exit. Transition 1
Comments: I attached my shoes to the bike using the dental floss technique and it worked perfectly. I exited T1 with about 3 other guys and they stopped just past the timer to finish with their shoes and mounting up. I came out, swung onto the bike, and took off leaving them behind. Of course they all passed me about a half of a mile down the road. What would you do differently?: Spend less time putting on socks. Bike
Comments: I kept a high cadence going up all the hills because I have a triple but I was pretty worn out at the finish. I only passed one person that didn't pass me right back and that one person (a women) passed me early in the run. What would you do differently?: Just be in better riding shape and use my gearing better. Transition 2
Comments: I actually finally used the technique of getting out of the shoes just before arriving at T2. It felt cool and I was psyched up, but that turned out to be the last real burst of energy I had left. I rode in with my feet on top of my shoes and then swung over to ride on one pedal just before stepping off just at the T2 line, perfect. I practiced this. I got my shoes and hat on quickly but was not eager to exit T2. I had brought some of the small drink bags with sports drink in them but when they jiggled in my jersey pocket as I started the run I decided to leave them at the drink table just outside the run start. What would you do differently?: Nothing, it went well, except I might try using a fuel belt. Run
Comments: I ran all the way to the second drink table, about a mile and a half and then for the first time at a triathlon started walking. I walked through the drink station and then tried to start running again and only managed a half mile before I started to walk again. Major bonk, I needed more fluids and electrolytes badly. I ran and walked the rest of the 10K but started to get calf cramps in the last 2 mile or so whenever I tried to run. When I saw the finish line I sprinted hard for it even though it hurt. Everyone was already over at the awards ceremony and only the finish line personnel saw me finish. I found out that if I had entered as a 225+ Clydesdale I would have got second place in that group because only one other guy signed up for it. What would you do differently?: Better fueling/hydration and more long running workouts Post race
Warm down: Just sat exhausted and ate the good food they had afterwards. What limited your ability to perform faster: I hadn't done enough distance training and enough bricks. Event comments: I will do this race again Last updated: 2004-04-01 12:00 AM
