Pre-race routine:

Drank 1 cup of coffee, ate 1 banana and 1/2 an oatmeal cookie. Got to starting line 45 minutes before the start to get a good position.
Event warmup:

Stayed relaxed and warm in my throw away clothes, used my albuterol inhaler 15 minutes before the start, drank my Gatorade and discarded the botte, took warm ups off 5 minutes before the start. My warm up will be in the first mile.
Run
  • 3h 58m 7s
  • 26.2 miles

Comments:

Good run but I wouldn't have stopped at two of the water stops towards the end of the race if I had to do it over again. This was a PR by 4 minutes over my August marathon so I have nothing to complain about really. I also qualified for Boston in 2007!!
What would you do differently?:

See comments above.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked lots.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stopping too much at the water stops and when I wanted to bypass a water stop being slowed by the congestion in the race course.

Event comments:

If you want to run a fast time, run Chicago!!

Course: Flat and Fast. I couldn't tell you where I was at any given time because I was either looking at someone's legs in front of me or focusing on maintaining my pace. I heard the roar of the crowd and some great bands playing along the way and it kept me motivated. Just before the finish line, runners must run up a slight grade before turning a corner for the downhill finish. The course is crowded the entire way. Water and Gatorade were given to runners in big cups which was GREAT because you could run with it and not spill it everywhere before you got a chance to drink. Some water stops slowed me down because it was so narrow you couldn't get by runners when you didn't want to stop. Hydration support was very, very good!!

Congratulations!

Your report brings back memories of when I ran Chicago.  What a great event.  Very well supported!

I'm going to Boston in April to support my wife.  Maybe you'll be there now that you've qualified???
