Are these supplements on the Olympic (IOC or WADA) banned substances list? A reference like "Lance armstrong takes these" may suffice.

None those are banned as far as I know. Bewatchful for efedra and high doses of caffine though.

Thanks for posting this Mike.  I've been looking for this exact recipe.

Subject: Not Sure That is the 'Original'...
Unless someone knows differently, the 'original' IMC was put together by Brad Kearns in the early 90's when Cytosport & Champion were a single company and it was (3) scoops of Cytomax & (3) scoops of Metabolol Endurance. This concentration is relatively thick so I cannot imagine adding another scoop of both Cytomax & Met Endurance and putting in MCT oil & gel.

We have been recommending the Iron Cocktail for nearly a decade and have since adjusted the mixture slightly to include (2) scoops Cytomax, (2) scoops Metabolol Endurance and (3) scoops Carbo Pro. The purpose of the adjustment was that many athletes felt the original mixture was a little too thick (myself included), so by substituting Carbo Pro we were able to reduce the osmolality while maintaining calorie concentration.

You may want to review my Race Report from IMF (9:31 PR) as there are quite a few Q&A threads after it specifically concerning the Iron Cocktail and how it is used successfully.

I typically will blend it w/ my hand mixer w/ about 16oz of water, put it in a large 26-28oz bottle and then top it off with water to the rim. I would say it is somewhere in the vicinity of 22-24oz after all is said and done. The thing you don't want to do is take 28oz of water, blend it and then try to put it in a 28oz bottle as it will overflow.

And I STRONGLY recommend getting a hand blender/mixer from Wal-Mart or wherever as it's our most used appliance in the house. Works on anything from Endurox to MudSlides :o)

Brian,
I have a question about the IMC. I used the recipe that substitutes Hammer Perpetuem for the Metalobol Endurance in my first iron tri. It gave me lots of fuel for the bike but it seemed to upset my stomach for the first half of the run. One the nausea and stomach pains passed, I was running like normal> I only experienced the discomfort when I was running-walking was no problem. Any suggestions as to tweaking the mix to avoid this? The IMC was my only fuel until the run.I had tons of energy, my legs felt great but my gut no so much.

How long before you got off the bike did you finish the IMC? The reason I ask this is that I also cannot run well w/ it still in my stomach (those that read my IMF Race Report know what happens when you try to get too much of it in at mile 105 :o)

I only tried substituting the Met Endurance for Perpetuem once at the MusselMan 1/2 and didn't have the greatest response from a GI perspective, but have heard little negative feedback when mixed as prescribed.

Now that you mention it, I think I was draining the last of my bottles about 20 minutes before the end of the bike. Maybe that is too close to the run? I have to say, the IMC is great for providing me with enough calories in an easy to carry format. I cram all my calories into two bike bottles and chase it with water. It really is convenient. Perhaps I should finish the last of it well before the run-that might be the issue.

Scott,

I don't think there's a specific timeframe that everyone can use across the board. There are athletes I coach who use the IMC in a flask on the run, so obviously they can tolerate it. What I would suggest to you is when you use this in training on the big bricks (you are using it in training right!), see what your tolerance is so you can replicate that on race day. Ideally you want to try to finish the last portion as close to the run as possible, but not so close that you're going to repeat these GI issues.

For me, I try to finish it by mile 105 in an IM which gives me about 20 minutes (+/-) before I get off the bike which has proved to be fine.

Good Luck!
