For me in Seattle we are in a 5 month "rain out" (I am fairweather). However on the CompuTrainer I am putting my miles in.... DO I TRAIN HEART RATE? MUSCLES (IE MORE TIME IN BIG RING)? BOTH? Non of the above? Thanks

Right now i would say you are just bulding your base. zone 1/2 HR and miles, no real reason to train in the big ring right now. You could do some big ring drills just to mix it up but, the main goal is maintenance and base.

I was going to point you towards Rich's site. Good to see his article here. What he say makes alot of sense. It is useless to recommend long rides in zone 1 and 2 in the winter. Nobody is going to spend 4-5 hours on the trainer regularly. The LSD stuff in the winter is OK if you live in SOCAL. For everybody else, it is not practical because of weather and shorter days. The alternatives are short slow distance (not productive), or adding some harder stuff in (more productive). I like Rich's big gear progression ideas for trainer workouts. Also check out Michael McCormack. However, you will not find much detail on his site.

Hey Mike,

No, I was planning to ride out there on the Gold Wing to visit athletes and family in the SE, then ride home. Katrina put a stop to that, so I won't be there.

I'm no longer a low cadence guy. These days its LTHR/FT work strictly at race specific cadence. Read my Cadence Comfort article on this site for my thoughts about cadence.

How did your wife's family fair in the hurricane? I saw from a sat photo that Jesuit was flooded.

Good to see you again,
