Fun facts to know and tell. However, the EMT's don't carry Kotex in their emergency vehicle and this chick is younger than I am so I don't think she learned it on a WWII battlefield or field hospital. And, really, she should have stopped after the first or second or third time.

The real problem with my class is that 80% of the knuckleheads can't/won't shutup. They talk incessantly. Is the subject neck wounds? "Once, when I was in high school..." Is the subject a sucking chest wound? "I knew this guy who's cousin was..."  Lacerations? "Once when I was at Busch Gardens this chimp bit this girl's finger off..."

Who cares?! Shut up! That's what I want to tell them. Class would be over about 33% sooner if they would shut their pieholes.

Can you tell I'm looking forward to class tonight?

Actually the story about the monkeys at busch gardens sounded pretty interesting.

Yeah, did they reattach it? Or did the monkey get to keep it?

They traded with the monkey, her finger for some food. I don't know if it was reattachable but they did recover the finger. Our storyteller had no compassion for the victim; she said she was a rookie animal keeper who was 'showing off' to her parents who came to see her.

Oops, no wait. The keeper who she said was showing off had her hand just inches from the lion's cage. The lion reached out and grabbed her hand, yanked it and her arm inside the cage and bit off the arm at about the elbow. This was the keeper's fault.

This story led into the story about the elephant who tripped its trainer and stepped on her head when she was down. Our storyteller blamed this on the keeper too. The keeper died.

I'm not there for storytelling. I'm there to learn First Responder crap and go home. I go straight from work (and had to skip my 5pm run!) to the class, have a 45-60 minute commute to the Fire Department Training facility, miss dinner and get home late. I don't give a rat's *** about everybody's horror stories. STFU and let's move along with the training!

Downunderman - 2005-11-09 5:05 PM Renee is there a practical element or role play involved in this course? If so, seek your revenge during.

Hmmm... we're doing a Search & Rescue role play tonight. Maybe I could volunteer to be a victim and try to projectile vomit on her. No... that won't do. I'd actually have to vomit and that ain't cool. Then she'd try to wipe my chin with a Kotex...

I did the first responder/back country medicine course when I was in the states back in '99. We did a scenario at night where a family gathering (BBQ) was hit by lightning. I was the patient and there were a number of rescuers. There was also a gunman from the family gathering roaming the woods. (hey it was in Ameriaca after all) The point of the gunman was to ensure the site was secure before entering. Keep that in the back of your mind when you do it. They love to spring stuff oon you like that. It was a great course and even though I am no longer officially certified, I have the ability to still, perhaps save someone.

Which company is running the course?

Just read the rest of the posts. Maybe you could suggest you do the night exercise at a zoo. 15 walk in 3 come out.

Oh yeah, that'd be a great idea. Then Ms. Animal Keeper would say of every victim: I would have treated their wounds but it was their own fault.  Ms. Kotex will be carrying around a package of 'feminine hygiene products' the size of a jumbo bag of diapers.

The Search & Rescuse exercise is part of my CERT training (Community Emergency Response Team) which fell under CitizenCorps until FEMA pulled the funding. The First Responder course is conducted by the Tampa Fire & Rescue department but paid by our CERT grant monies.

With any luck Ms Kotex and Ms Animal rescuer would be among the 12 that don't make it. See where I coming from. Wink wink nudge nudge say no more.

I did my First responder through a private company. they were great. had some really cool photos of people with fish hooks in eyes, a fence post that empailed a VW driver (Post extraction), etc etc. The guy was a paramedica from the 60's and 70's and these were his home collection from the days ghe worked. Pretty cool stuff.
