Pre-race routine:

1 Bananna, 1 cup coffee.
Event warmup:

A bunch of standing around for the race to start. Ron and I got there around 5:30am and were able to line up about half way in the Gold group. Luckily Ron brought some heat pads and those really helped take the bite off. Got to meet lots of people, and strangly the girl (Meg Leblanc) who started in front of me finished 1 second ahead of me in the race but I never saw her the entire time...that was weird.

Comments:

Following tandem bikes is awesome when going downhill. Tandem bikes suck going up hill and getting up and going off a turn.
What would you do differently?:

Try harder when I felt I had the strength instead of holding back to conserve. I was just trying to make it to the end. The longest ride I had done pre race was 60 miles and I was exhausted on that ride + it was several months ago.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a massage and drank/ate a lot...it was all good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not knowing if I was going to be able to make it to the end without bonking.

Course: I anticipated a lot more up hill stuff than there was. The course was only challenging due to distance wise, not anything that was get off your bike and walk difficult. There was one hill after the second wash that I was chugging on, my hi HR was achieved in the first 30min of the race and not on that hill.

Very respectable time of 5:09.  Good job!

I did this ride back in '97 and loved it.  What a huge crowd it draws.

Casey,

You are my idol!  Look at you, lined up with the Gold.  We got there at about 6:40, so I didn't have to wait in the cold too long. I maxed my heart rate out on that hill after the wash, but I refused to get off the bike.  A tandem stop right in front of me but I managed to get around them.

I could not eat afterwards, we had a TnT party and I couldn't eat a thing, had to stop at Safeway and buy some soup.  I've made up for the eating since then, however.

Told you you'd go fast once you got those clipless pedals. Great job!
