Pre-race routine:

Ate a piece of toast with pnb, coffee, and water. Arrived way too early. I thought the race started at 8 and it did, for the little kids. The 5k people went next at 8:15, then the 10k at 8:45. But since I got there so early, I got the best parking space ever.
Event warmup:

I stretched and went up and down the stairs a few times (ladies' room). Ran around a bit.
Run
  • 1h 13m 45s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

This was huge for me. I did this same 10k a few times before when I thought I was in shape. I walked/ran it then. Today, after 6 mos of tri-training) I ran all but about 2 minutes of it (walking through the water stations). I just kept reflecting on how far I've come. When I started training I literally could not run for more than 2 minutes.

When the race started I got a bit mental because about a thousand people sprinted past me. I just kept saying to myself "you are an endurance athlete, and although you are slow, you could go for days." I had to keep telling myself this and it worked. Eventually I started passing people that had to stop and walk. It felt great. It put my head back where it needed to be.

The bridge is divided in half by big concrete barriers, so after you cross the bridge, you do a small loop and turn around and come back across. On the way up the really fast people were passing me on the other side of the barriers already coming back. This is my favorite part. I knew several of them and cheered for them as they were tearing up that side of the bridge. I thought about how I want to be on that side of the bridge one day, running back when people are still coming over. Well, on my way back over I was tickled pink to see people still making their way over.

Great run, great day.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster, but I'm working on it. It would also help if I hadn't had this cough/cold thing. But overall, I can't think of anything.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and walked around. Looked for people I knew, ate a bagel. And then, someone handed me a small cup of beer. I drank it and then felt like crap for a long time. Post-race beer too soon=yucky, tired, blech.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Would be faster if I were smaller. Inexperience as a runner, but I'm getting there, darn it!

Event comments:

I had gotten used to there being a drink station right at the top of the bridge, I was so bummed when it wasn't there! They had scooted it down to the bottom of the bridge....I could see it, so I ran for it.

Dang it I wish I had ran this race !!!! Would have been so great to run over that big monstrous son ofa gun. You are really doing great and I hope you will give yourself a pat on the back from me for your accomplishment. Now set your sight on the HH Half Mary. And March will be here before you know it.
Good job triathlete. It's all about the endurance.

Great race Shannon, and remarkable progress! You have great self-awareness and have things in the such clear perspective. I loved your race report, and will look for many more from you. I do have one question though. How much smaller? Like four-foot-eight ...  four-foot-nine? You'd need a whole new wardrobe you know. Great job!

Great job, Shannon! You did so good! I'm so glad I signed up and did the run. Savannah is so beautiful in the morning. But if I do it next year, I'm calling you so I'll actually know someone running!

Great job! Way to stay on top of your mental game.

The view sounds really cool, too.
