Subject: Bike fitting question...
I am getting a fitting this weekend. It will be done at the LBS I have shopped at for 27 years! The shop is family owned, run by Dad (Bob) & Mom (Evonne) and there son James. I even raced on the shop's BMX team when I was a kid with James. The only bike I did not buy from them is my tri bike, which is the one I getting a fit on. James will be doing the fitting. He is a track racer and is a roadie at heart. He had some training in FIST and will be doing the fitting. He is meeting me on Sunday morning, 45 mins before the shop opens to start the fitting. He is charging me about 1/3 of the normal fitting price. He will make adjustments as needed. He also said we will go and ride after, so he can watch me on the bike and make adjustments if needed. He said he is going to give me the "team" fitting (He is the Capt'n of a respected and successful racing team). I judge he is going out of his way for me, again.
My question is, with the history I have with them, is it appropriate to tip? If so, how much? I am planning to bring a couple of dozen doughnuts for the shop and mechanics.

I've never been tipped for a bike fit, but I charge a relatively high rate and it does sound like this guy is going above and beyond the norm. If he's charging 1/3 price, you could still tip and have some left over, so I would.

The best thing you could do, though, is show loyalty to the shop by sending them customers. Talk about how great they are on training rides and at the races.

I'd say a six-pack might be appropriate...assuming he's doing you a favor to some degree and you've known him for years.  Of course you'll have to help him take care of it after a short ride.

They already have my loyalty! I have sent them 20 or more that have bought bikes and have become as loyal as me. If you ask where to buy a bike in Houston, it will always be Southwest Cyclery first. If they don't have it, then Northwest Cyclery (their other store). I just don't want to seem like I am flaunting money or being "snooty". I do want him to know I am greatful though.
It's a tough one I think.

since you know the guys pretty well, maybe instead of cash, you give them a gift cert at a nearby spot so they can all grab lunch or something....

Gary, the schedule I have has you at 7pm on Friday for bike fit and V02 max testing, then again Sat afternoon after the Evolution clinic for run VO2 max testing. We'll be sure to confirm everything with Ken early next week though.  I've decided to have my bike fit down at the local tri shop so I'm just doing the 2 VO2 max tests and the clinic.

I vote for consumables over cash...it shows more thought!  A case of yummy beer and pizzas, or for a  different type, mochas and biscotti...

I am doing it myself for the shop that built my bike tonight.  he spent about 1 1/2 hours and only charged me $40. That's the published price for a bike build, but he really did a great job and I only gave him about an hour's notice before stoppign by.
