I am doing my very first tri - a sprint on Catalina Island on Nov. 8. (www.pacificsportsllc.com)

I have been training for only 5 weeks and because I am already in fairly good shape (former rugby and water polo player), feel that my condensed preparation is enought to get me past the finish line (we'll see!).

Anyway, I currently train for running with an old pair of shorts, ride a mountain bike with slick tires, and swim with an old pair of long trunks, goggles I found at my gym's "lost and found", and a half-rotten swim cap.

My questions: For the swim portion I was wondering if I need a wetsuit (if so, what works best?). Water temps are in the mid 60's. Also, do I need those hard-core looking ocean goggles? What should I pack in terms of food, water, bike repair equipment, etc.?

I can see myself being totally disorganized and running in the wrong direction or knocking down an entire rack of bikes without knowing! This should be a blast. I love being a rookie because everyone else out there was in my shoes at one point!

their is some more stuff to bring at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/gear.htm   although i am sure my list is far from complete...others????

i ran my tri with the basics like u...swim trunks (warm water) - def need goggles...i like tyr.  they usually give u a swim cap, i biked with the mtb - knobbies...BUT PASSED A FEW slow-pokes!!!  just a pair of shorts for bike/run...nothing special.  some power gels taped to the bike frame (i looked total newby-ish!)...no bike repair stuff...i know...tempting the fate of the gods...cuz it will happen to u sooner or later.

main thing is...make a list, and most importantly, sit down close your eyes and visualize your triathlon and the transition area - set it up in your living room: what u will be doing and in what sequence...right down everything u need or can think of needing...michael has a good transition article at laying_out_a_transition_area

def want to hear your RR!!!

Something that I have started to do is take a insulated water bottle with Gatorade in it to have after the finish along with a powerbar. Sometimes what they are having post race for food may not be exactly what you are wanting to eat and having a cold Gatorade afterwards helps me to recover.

Still Tri'n

Thanks for the info., both of you.

I like the "transition" organization. I will lay everything out a few days before the event to make sure I am kosher.

As far as the equipment goes, I'll hold off on buying anything until I move beyond the sprint distance. Although, I will definitely break out my lucky "Save water, drink beer" t-shirt for the run.

Can't wait!

I've also got an anal-retentive list in .pdf format that you can download if you wish...

www.scottherrick.com

click on 'Other Stuff' then you'll find the list. (page 1 is general travel, 2nd is race checklist)

Cheers,
S.
