Going for my first here, anybody have any suggestions???? I am a runner and a peddler but swimming is definitely not my gig. It is a personal goal to complete a tri so I must. Event is in late May. How fast can I be ready to swim?

Welcome to BT Jennifer!!!!

Great choice to do a sprint tri. I am training for my first one also.

Check out the training plans - there are some specifically for swimming.

Good luck with your training and your first race!

Thanks for the pep. Good luck to you as well. Do you know of any articles or guides to the "protocal" for competing in a tri?

You're welcome!

I purchased a couple of books to help give me some insight. There are many out there and people have different opinions. It also depends on what you are looking for.

Here is the site that I used to choose the books: http://www.trifind.com/tx.html
If you click the books, it sends you to Amazon.com and there you can read the Table of Contents and excerpts.

Lots of reading basically.

Welcome to BT and good luck with your first TRI. There are a LOT of articles here on BT that talk about swimming and several training plans geared towards swimming. Plus, there are a lot of BTers that have some great knowledge too. Can you make it in two months....that all depends on you. I'm cheering for you!!!

You should have enough time to get ready for the swim.  I started swimming last summer and it took me about 6 weeks to swim a mile straight.  I am NOT a swimmer either! (or runner or biker for that matter).  You might not have your times where you want them; but getting ready for the distance should be doable.

Welcome to BT and good luck!

READ READ READ!!!  Then get in the pool and try to remember as many things as you read.  Try them out.  See what feels comfortable to you.  Perhaps nothing will at first.  But keep at it.

I went from never swimming in a race to swimming in my first tri (June 2005) in a month.  I swam every day for the two weeks before the race.  I read every swimming book I could get my hands on.

You'll do fine!  Alot of this is getting over the fear of open water swims.  I couldn't imagine what it'd be like doing 400m in the open water last year...and now I find myself shrugging at anything under 800.  You'll get there too!!

Good luck!  And of course WELCOME TO BT!!
