Pre-race routine:

Just the usual waiting game...Matthew did walk me to the starting line and waited with me and approx 500 runners till someone (hopefully the race organizer, Don Allison) yelled "GO!" We were off and he began the drive down to the finish line in Salisbury.
Event warmup:

Not much to speak of.
Run
  • 3h 18m 31s
  • 20 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

No euphoria, just relief at the finish line and entry to the great commonwealth of Massacusetts...the last 4 miles of the 20-mile Eastern States race were really tough. Diaphragm cramping (side stitches) thoroughout mile 16-17 really dampened my pace. I am just so happy to have been "ahead of pace" for the first 13 miles of the race, which makes sense because of my experiences with half marathons.
What would you do differently?:

I'd never run anything beyond 14 miles, so those were tough. I didn't know what to expect except slowly losing speed and occasional knee issues. I would've liked some new knees at mile 18, that's for sure! Next time, train more miles beforehand and bring candy like gummy bears or candy corn!!
Post race
Warm down:

Walking, wanting to fall over, going to a porta-potty and not caring about anything except being able to stand back up again. In short, I was pretty whipped! My running pal Scott asked "so you're ready for boston now?" and I told him "honestly, I don't know about boston...today was enough" My decision isn't made yet, but I do feel pretty good now (4 hours post-race), so we'll see!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Darn diaphragm cramps at mile 16 -- ouch! Some knee pain, and a few spates of walking in the miles 15-20, but the goal was to just run sub-10's and finish strong, and I did that.

Event comments:

Need food (not just a single, king-size bag of ruffles) at the finish, which was at a fairly busy intersection, but to be fair I didn't go to the post-race party/awards at a nearby casion. Might've missed out on the good stuff, but the finish was all I wanted. For me, a new record distance at a respectable pace was what made this a great race and a great day.

All splits forgotten now, but I was happy just to be running.
Course: The Eastern States 20-miler course was awesome, downhill w/tailwind most of the way. Surfside communities, salt marshes, and the sight and sounds of waves coming to shore on at least 12 of the 20 miles. Lovely!

Thanks...I felt humbled in those last few miles, but so happy to have finished!

Two post-race meals later (both Italian, so carb-replenishing heaven), I feel content and happy.

Boston is still on my mind, but first, a biz trip to Baltimore where I'll STAND at a trade-show booth for the next two days. ugh! Give me strength. LOL Life's funny that way.

Oh you can run 20 miles!  You'll have no problem standing in trade show

Great job today.  You are going to do Boston!

Nice race Sunny.  Wow I saw this race online last night and I ALMOST did this one.  Changed my mind at the last second because I was unsure of 20 miles after racing two weekends in a row.  You did great...was it very windy, because the weather reports for the area were predicting strong-ish winds!

Thanks DK...you really think I should run Boston, even as a (somewhat poorly prepared) bandit?

And Max, did you do the 10-miler instead?   I guess that could've been a kinder option.  For me, the wind was pretty kind and from the north, so a tailwind, most of the day.  We were all blessed with good runinng temps and not too much sun poking through the clouds yesterday.

Thanks for the encouragement ya'll -- I'm actually sorta looking forward to the trade show standing around today.  Sitting seems like it should feel comfortable, but it really doesn't....odd.

Thanks, and you know, I do feel like I could do Boston, but the question is SHOULD I do Boston.  Just to do it?  Just this once?  I really don't enjoy distance running that much beyond mile 15.  It becomes very much like "what's the point?".

No, actually I drove down to Westfield (south of Springfield MA) to do a 1/2 marathon instead.  I should have looked at the Eastern States run earlier...maybe next year I'd like to try it!
