Pre-race routine:

Was TOTALLY NERVOUS!! PB on wheat with banana for breakfast. Got out to the site a little over an hour ahead of time. Met Natasha (new friend!) and confessed nervousness. I really didn't know what to do with myself.
Event warmup:

Ran out about .5 mile on the course and back, slow jog. Stretched out. Felt pretty good and strong.
Run
  • 31m 20s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

I came out too fast. Charley warned me not to come out too fast and then I did. My first mile was 9:20. I didn't *feel* too fast. I felt strong. After the turnaround there was a long, slight upward grade, and the sun got really hot all of a sudden, and I think that was the big slowdown. I stopped to dry heave once and then my stomach felt better. I ran out of gas and couldn't sprint at all to the finish.

Plusses: nice, strong first mile; pretty solid overall pace; four minute improvement on time since October; took 3rd place age group award; good season opener.

Minuses: Came out too fast, nothing left at the end; I WANTED 30-31 MINUTES!! DANGIT!! Need to learn to manage heat and nerves better -- this will only come with experience, I think.

Well, go me, anyway.
What would you do differently?:

See above.
Post race
Warm down:

Wait, I wasn't supposed to just stop?? :oP CYTOMAX!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and the nerves. I'm working on this. I am psyched to do better next time.

Event comments:

This was pretty fun! If they do it next year, I'll use it as my BolderBoulder qualifier.

MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR FIRST GREEN SQURE!   KEEP IT UP!

Good job -- I can relate to the nervousness for a first race, and then you come to the end and you are so high you don't know if you'll ever come down.

For what it's worth, there is one phrase that I am trying in my workouts/races.  Not that I always do it well, but I tri!    "MANGE PACE, MANGAGE PACE, MANGAGE PACE!"

Keep up the great work -- you'll do AWESOME!

Nice job!
It sure was hot!
I hear you about the (un)managing the pace!
I hate 5K's! I never know how to run them and I always start too fast. Every single time I tell myself 'today I will hold myself back for the first mile', and every time I fool myself, because it doesn't *feel* like it's too fast, but then I blow up and both second and third mile are progressively slower.
